I received my second NSF grant with / because of Debra's help, she was superb. She knew how to help researchers and administrators find and write grants. I learned a great deal from her and I respected her tremendously, her energy and intelligence. I miss her. There's no one like her, she was in a class by herself.

I am sad to learn of Debra's passing--she was a wonderful colleague but also much more than that. She went beyond helping me find financial support for my research to providing genuinely enthusiastic moral support and encouragement that has stayed with me. I vividly recall her email check-ins, even on weekends, to see how I was doing with an application, phone calls, office visits, and thoughtful and effective rewrites. I still use some of her wording today to describe my research. In between, we managed to chat about life in general. My sincerest condolences to her loved ones; may her memory be a blessing.
