Debra Elizabeth Swartzfager, known affectionately as Debbie by her loved ones, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024, at the age of 69. Born on August 1, 1954, in Evanston, Illinois, Debbie's journey through life was one marked by an unwavering dedication to others, a heart filled with laughter, and a spirit that lifted everyone around her.
Debbie's early years in Evanston were filled with the love and guidance of her parents, Dorothy and Earle Kappelman, both of whom predeceased her. She grew up in a world where family was the cornerstone of life, a value she carried with her always.
Debbie's life was a testament to the power of selflessness and love. She shared an incredible bond with her husband, Charles Swartzfager, and together they created a life rich in joy and compassion. Her role as a mother to her daughter Etta Avila, alongside her son-in-law Juan, was characterized by boundless love and support. As a sister to Edward Kappelman and his wife Jean, she was a beacon of kindness and care. The light of her life shone brightly through her grandsons Juan, Desi, Max, and Milo, who were the recipients of her endless affection and encouragement. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, brother in-law George Swartzfager and sister-in-law Kathy Scott (Jay). Each of them held a special place in her heart, and she in theirs. Debbie's ability to make each family member feel seen and loved was one of her most extraordinary gifts.
For over 25 years, Debbie served as a special education paraprofessional, a role that she didn't just perform but embodied. Her passion for helping those with special needs to unlock their potential was not just her job-it was her calling.
Debbie's laughter was a melody that resonated in the hearts of all who knew her. It was a reflection of her ability to find joy in the simplest moments and to spread that joy to others. Her love for music was more than a hobby; it was a way for her to connect with the world and express the vibrancy of her soul. And when it came to her grandsons, they were the rhythm that kept her heart dancing to the beat of life's most beautiful tune.
Her many friends, who were more like extended family, will attest to the warmth and laughter that she brought into their lives.
As we say goodbye to Debra Elizabeth Swartzfager, let us not do so with heavy hearts but with a celebration of the incredible life she led.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Debbie would want all donations to be given to Planned Parenthood. Her advocacy for women's and human rights remained unwavering, and she would want us to keep fighting passionately. https://www.plannedparenthood.org/
