Obituary for Delbert W Sumter

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Delbert W Sumter, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us peacefully on August 18, 2025 on his farm in Glencoe, Oklahoma at the age of 89.

Born on August 11, 1936 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Delbert lived a life marked by kindness, integrity, and devotion to family. He married Maretta Jane Potter on May 26, 1954 in Paris, Arkansas. They were married 61 years until her death in 2015. Through this union they had four children, Brad Sumter, Scott Sumter, Kim (Sumter) Fraizer, and Tom Sumter, whom he guided with steady hands and a generous heart. To his family, he was not only a provider and protector but also a source of laughter, wisdom, and unwavering support.

Delbert was enlisted in the Marines from 1955 – 1960 where he was a Gunnery Seargent. He was very proud of his military service and spoke of it often. He was also a proud member of the Mason’s. In 1964 he became a 32nd degree Mason, and he also received his 50 year Mason pin.

Delbert worked as an oilfield contractor for most of his career, where he was admired for his dedication and strong work ethic. Beyond his career, he found joy in taking care of cattle on the family farm, hunting, fishing, and watching OU football. His happiest moments were spent surrounded by family, whether gathered around the dinner table, cheering at sporting events, or simply enjoying the quiet moments of everyday life.

Those who knew him will remember his warm smile, storytelling, and sense of humor. His legacy lives on through the values he instilled in his children and the love he shared with all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by sons Brad Sumter and his wife Terri of Claremore, Oklahoma, Scott Sumter of Glencoe, Oklahoma, Tom Sumter and his wife Tana of Bull Shoals, Arkansas, and daughter Kim Fraizer and her husband Mark of Tonkawa, Oklahoma, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a twin brother Fred Sumter and his wife Gwen of Houston, TX.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Jane Sumter, his wife of over 60 years Maretta Sumter, a brother, Laddy Sumter, a granddaughter, Nichole Sumter, and a niece, Shawn Campbell.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, August 25 at Poteet Funeral Home in Pawnee, Oklahoma at 10am with burial service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua, Kansas at 2pm.

Though his absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, Delbert’s love and memory will remain in our hearts forever.
