Reflections of Life
On June 17, 1933, Delores (Sorrell) Thompson, was born to the family of Mr. Lloyd Sorrell and Mrs. Leona Cochran Sorrell in Guadalupe County, Texas. She grew up on a farm and graduated from Rosenwald High School in May of 1950. She was a member of the basketball team. On November 14, 2025 she went home to be with the Lord at the age of 92. Preceded in death by one brother, Ellis Sorrell, and her sisters, Beatrice Chinn and Barbara Joyce Brown.
Ms. Delores Sorrell married Fred Douglas Thompson on March 29, 1952 in Hondo, Texas. From this union three children were born: Craig, Morris and Lessie Thompson. It was of utmost importance to her that her children be saved and educated in the Word of God. She also encouraged them to obtain their education. Her love of family was shown by her attendance and participation in family events. She prayed for her children, grandchildren and loved them dearly.
Ms. Delores served in the medical arena for over thirty years. This includes working at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; the Dialysis and Telemetry Unit; Hotel Dieu; Sun Towers Hospital, and Las Palmas in El Paso, Texas, where she supervised unit clerks.
Mother Thompson was a woman of God who loved the Lord, a born again believer in Christ Jesus and was referred to as a” true prayer warrior” by her Pastor Lonnie Townsend, Sr. She believed in the power of prayer in and out of season. She began her Christian journey as a young child, attending a country church with her grandmother and siblings. Before uniting with Unity Missionary Baptist Church, she was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Yes, she was a child of the most High King, Jesus and an active member of the Unity Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years. She was baptized at Bethel Temple on East Yandell, by Elder Clayton Carr. Mother Thompson danced and praised the Lord with all her heart and might in the sanctuary and wherever the Lord blessed her to go.
Mother Thompson, called by God to be a prayer warrior was appointed by the founding Pastor of Unity Missionary Baptist Church, Dr. Onnie I. Kirk, Sr., Doctor of Divinity. She served and lead as the President of the Unity Missionary Baptist Church Prayer Warriors for 29 years. She, along with the other prayer warriors, served with gladness, praying fervently, lifting up the prayer requests of the church family members, community as well as the nation. As a member of the Mission Ministry, she served as a teacher of the Word of God and was honored on Senior Saint’s Day by Second Baptist Church on November 17, 2018. A City Proclamation was signed by Mayor Dee Margo. She was a faithful and praying missionary ministering to the sick and shut in, taught the Word of God in homes as well as hospitals or wherever needed. Mother Thompson had a heart to uplift in prayer those in church leadership (the pastors, the fivefold ministry, and all those connected with the work of the Kingdom of God).
Her prayers also focused on the soul salvation of the lost. She touched the hearts of many lives because of Christ. To God be the glory, for all He empowered His servant to accomplish while on her earthly journey.
She donated to various charitable organizations. Her donations included, but were not limited to, the church Thanksgiving baskets, clothing and feeding the hungry. Mother Thompson lived by the scripture that states, …”It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
Mother Delores Sorrell Thompson leaves to cherish her loving memories, her children, Craig Douglas Thompson (El Paso, TX) , Morris Glenn Thompson (Denver, CO) , and Lessie V. Thompson (El Paso, TX),adopted son, Ellsworth Hilt (El Paso, TX); granddaughter, Leanne Karina Adamson (Denver, CO); grandson-in-law, Seth Adamson (Denver, CO); great grandson, Torrey Scott Adamson (Denver, CO); one sister: Helen Jean Chandler (San Antonio, TX); and a host of nieces and nephews and church family.
