In memory of
Ellie Smith

Ms Raines was one of the few sources of light for me in the dark nightmare of 1992-95 Laing middle school. You introduced me to ideas and books that changed my life: Fahrenheit 451, 2001 a Space Odyssey, Asimov! You put on Enya and let us just write!! You gave me confidence in my voice when I so desperately needed it. You saw me and heard me when I felt invisible. I will never, ever forget you.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Miss Anne. She was truly a spirited person that kept all on their toes here at Hollings Cancer Center. Her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor was contagious. I will certainly miss her smile. May the memories of good times spent with her ease the mourning of her passing. Much Love to the Family.

Mama Raines was my foster mom during my college years of CofC. I remember spending many evenings at her house and I loved celebrating milestones together such as Sarah and Win's wedding. Her wit and humor was appreciated.
She was an amazing person and I am better for knowing her. Much love to the entire family. She will be greatly missed.

I met Anne many long years ago on the tennis court and though we have not been together in a while she is a personality one does not forget. My deepest sympathy to the family.

My condolences and love to the Taylor and Raines families. Anne will be sorely missed by so many. The world is less interesting without her, but may our indelible memories of her bring peace, comfort and even joy.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Raines family. I had the pleasure of knowing Anne as a fellow teacher at Laing Middle School. Anne had very high standards as an English teacher, and she had her own unique way of relating to her students. It was a powerful combination. And I know that her student are better adults because of her influence and love.
She also told the best stories and jokes. One day she was having a little trouble walking to class. I said to her, I thought you were a tennis player. How can you play if your feet hurt so bad?
She smiled and said, Oh, that's different. That's competition!

I am so sadden to hear of Anne's passing. I worked with Anne as her Assistant Principal at Laing. Whenever I was having a tough day, Anne knew how to make me laugh. Even after we both retired, I always looked forward to our occasional catch up phone call and as usual she always brought a smile to my face. She was not only a colleague but a sincere friend. I will miss her tremendously. My sincere condolences to the family.

There are a lot of great teachers in this world, but few are as loving, inspiring, and unique as Anne Raines was. She always insisted on our best efforts as students, and wasn't afraid to let us know when we weren't measuring up. It was a privilege to know her, and I will always treasure our time together.

Mrs. Raines, it is truly a blessing to have known you first as a student and later as a friend. You challenged us to open our hearts and minds, and gave us a window to the world. Thank you for the honesty, respect, and love you brought everyday to your classroom. We miss you dearly.

As a former student, Anne has always been so dear to me. She helped me navigate a difficult coming of age and stayed in my life long after I became an adult. She was my favorite teacher, and I will miss her sorely.
