Dennis was a member of the New Athens Commercial Club and the Lions Club, served as mayor of New Athens for 12 years, the Chrysler Dealer Council and the Air Force Reserves. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, camping and boating.
Preceding him in death were his parents 6 Oscar and Viola (Huch) Breithaupt, brother-in-law 6 Mike Laflen and a grandson 6 Connor Breithaupt.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife 6 the former Georgia Mavers, whom he married on October 23, 1965 at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, two sons 6 Eric (Debra) Breithaupt of Fort Mill, SC and Jason (Lisa) Breithaupt pf Waterloo, IL, his sister 6 Karen Laflen of Belleville, IL and six grandchildren 6 Blake, Savanah, Autumn, Emma, Benjamin and Jackson and many other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to St. Agatha Catholic Church, St. Louis Children s Hospital Foundation to support Dr. Melissa Mavers research in the Department of Pediatrics and Washington University Pediatrics.
Visitation: 9 6 11 a.m. on Monday November 24, 2025, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL
Memorial Services: 11 a.m. on Monday November 24, 2025, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in New Athens, IL with Fr. James M. Nall and Rev. Dr. Robert Koch officiating the services. Interment will follow at St. Agatha Catholic Cemetery in New Athens.
Heil-Schuessler Funeral Home in New Athens, IL is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis will be missed by so many.
He was so much fun to be with, a caring man, always having a hug and smile for you. You will be missed, but in the thoughts of all your friends on Kinkaid Lake.
