Dennis Bruce Francis died Tuesday, October 29 in his west Knox County home after a brief, fierce battle with cancer. His wife Theresa Habiger, daughter McKennah and grandsons Bentley and Grayson were with him at his passing.
Dennis was a lifelong Catholic and a gifted trial lawyer who softened the edges of his razor wit with a touch of blarney and an abundance of Irish charm. A yellow dog Democrat, he was a past chair of the Knox County Election Commission and a passionate defender of voting rights who also served on the state Democratic Executive Committee. He was a ride-or-die Buffalo Bills fan and a gregarious soul who celebrated St. Patrick's Day by handing out green carnations to friends and strangers alike.
The youngest of six children born to Irene and Malcolm Francis of Buffalo New York, Dennis arrived on April 15 1946 weighing in at 10 pounds and sporting a head full of dark curly hair. His sister Mary describes him as an extraordinarily beautiful child.
He came to Knoxville in 1970 after being accepted to attend the University of Tennessee College of Law. He was a graduate of Indiana State University, where he claimed to have majored in Driver's Education, which may or may not have been precisely accurate but made for a heck of a story. He slept in his car for until he made enough money tending bar on the Strip to rent a room in Ft. Sanders. Later, he would supplement his income by buying and selling antique furniture and stained-glass windows.
He got his law degree in 1974 and accepted a job as general counsel at Eastern State Psychiatric Hospital (later Lakeshore Mental Health Institute), where he settled in and began to establish himself professionally. He settled into Knoxville, too, and became a respected member of the local bar. He never met a stranger and had friends in places high and low.
In addition to Theresa, McKennah, Bentley and Grayson, Dennis is survived by his daughter Savannah, sister Mary, brother Patrick, several nieces and nephews and too many friends to count.
He was preceded in death by his parents Irene and Malcolm, sister JoAnne, brothers Edward and Malcolm and niece Shannon.
And he arrived in heaven half an hour before the devil knew he was dead.

Dennis was such a presence whom I enjoyed almost every work day for 30 years while working nextdoor to his office. We often cried on each other's shoulder about our children. Dennis was kind to everyone and never met a stranger. He will be sorely missed. Many prayers for the family as you face the days ahead without Dennis.

Theresa and family, I am very saddened to hear about Dennis's passing. We got to know each other very well in law school and as roommates. Our antics together will always remain embedded in the recesses of my mind and heart. Dennis was truly one of a kind.

Sincerely.......BRUCE GELLER

Having been friends with Dennis for more than thirty years, I shall certainly miss him. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing him from time to time as he practiced his profession. I enjoyed even more our tossing barbs at one another about our differing politics. Dennis was a very fine man and a good friend. His was an irreplaceable presence and wit.

I am so sad to hear about the passing of Dennis. He was always so kind to me and my family, and my father, Berkeley, adored him. I made the mistake of marrying a no-good Englishman in my early 20s, and Dennis helped with my divorce. I have never forgotten how wonderful he was. My sincerest condolences to Dennis´s family, and I love the line about the devil finding out an hour too late!

Dennis was a strong Democrat and I am a strong Republican, but we were good friends in spite of our political differences. He was a fine lawyer and a good and kind man. Like almost everybody, I really liked Dennis, and I am very sorry about his passing.

Dennis was a friend of many years. His wit, charm and good looks spoke for themselves. He also was one of the kindest, smartest and most generous individuals I have been blessed to know. Yes, there are stories I could tell...but he and I agreed long ago not to. Besides, I´m sure the statute of limitations have run on most of them! Love, prayers and sincere condolences to Theresa and his entire family. He was truly one in a million!

Dennis was one of my favorite members of the Bar. He was so kind when I was a young inexperienced lawyer. He was always willing to be a mentor. Our firm loved it when he would bring green gifts on St. Patrick´s Day. I remember his story about meeting Jimmy Buffet when the singer was just getting started.
Dennis was so full of life and enjoyed it to the fullest. He will be missed by so many. My sincere condolences to his family. Prayers are with you.

Mr. Francis,
I am so sorry to hear of your passing. I had the honor of teaching your daughter McKennah and your grandson Bentley in first grade at St. John Neumann Catholic School. You had the best wit and it was always fun to talk to you. May the angels rejoice in heaven and may everyone remember your great kindness on this earth. Much love to the family, Ashley Remeta
