Dennis M. Geagan

Dennis Michael Geagan was born in Buffalo, NY on July 12, 1941 and passed away peacefully on February 19, 2025 in Burlington, NC.
Dennis was the second of five children born to James and Roberta Geagan. Growing up, he enjoyed playing sports with his older brother and was especially fond of watching them with his dad. Dennis formed many lifelong friendships and met his future wife, Louise, while attending Roger Bacon High School in St. Bernard, Ohio.
After marrying and having three children of his own, Dennis went on to graduate from night school at University of Cincinnati with a degree in Economics while working full-time at General Motors in Norwood, Ohio. By the time he turned 30, he had five children and was quickly moving up in the ranks at GM, where he was highly valued for his managerial skills and business acumen. This led to moves around the country with his family of seven in tow, including Michigan, California and New Jersey.
Dennis was a devoted father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. His adult children all hold fond memories of the vacations he planned for them every summer in various locales - Cape Cod being a favorite.
Dennis eventually left General Motors after 25 years and went to work as a consultant for Conrail out of Bloomfield Hills, MI, where he worked until he retired. Never one to sit idle for long, however, it was after retirement that Dennis found his true calling as a volunteer firefighter with the Glassy Mountain Fire Department in the foothills of South Carolina. There he served proudly and heroically for 17 years and was eventually named Fire Commissioner. When he wasn't fighting fires, Dennis also spent his retirement years building two houses, traveling, forming new friendships, spending time with his grandchildren and pursuing his favorite hobby, golf. He was especially proud of the two hole-in-ones he hit, the second one at the age of 76! Dennis approached golf the way he did everything in life, giving it his all and always striving to improve. He held himself to high standards and was a role model for those around him, especially his children.
One of Dennis's best-kept "secrets" was that he loved to sing. The old Catholic church hymns he'd been raised on were some of his favorites and, to the frequent embarrassment of his children, he was always the loudest singer in church (no matter how off-key!) every Sunday.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, James and Roberta (Washburn) Geagan, and by his brothers, James, Michael and Robert. He is survived by his sister, Carol (James) Geers of Mason, OH, his children, Steven (Hua) of Newcastle, WA, Marguerite of Chapel Hill, NC, Kevin of Greenville, SC, Maureen of Nashville, TN and Molly of Burlington, NC, as well as 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and his beloved friend and companion, Judy Harrison, of Savannah, GA. He will be missed dearly and will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. May his spirit rest in eternal peace.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, February 28th at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 1st at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
