Dennis William Grimmer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2023, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He battled complications from Lewy body dementia and Parkinson's that stemmed from exposure to Agent Orange during his service in Vietnam. His departure leaves a void in the lives of all who knew him.
Dennis was born on September 12, 1949, in Fort Benton, Montana, and was raised in various places in the western United States along with his eight siblings: Dee, Janet, Don, David, Dennis, Diane, Dorothy, Duane, and Dwight. After graduating from Royal City High School in 1966, he enlisted in the United States Army from 1967 to 1970, dedicating himself to the service of his country. Dennis served as a Communications Specialist and Air Courier for the 4th Corps during the Vietnam War, earning the rank of Sergeant. Dennis had a great love for his country and continued to express deep gratitude for his opportunity to serve.
Upon his return, Dennis had a brief but adventurous trip through Europe with his two dearest high school friends, John Bennett, and Terry Dorsing. He then pursued a higher education and received a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from Central Washington University. In 1975, he embarked on a new chapter in Alaska, where he would meet the love of his life, Laura Clarke, in 1977. The couple joined their lives in marriage in 1978 and settled on the remote island of Port Protection, Alaska. Dennis worked as a hunting guide and he and Laura dedicated themselves to raising a family of six children: Renae, Rhonda, Aaron, Andrew, Jared, and Jordan.
In 1987, Dennis and his brother Dee founded Northwest Stone & Brick Co. in Arlington, Washington, showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit and determination. Dennis and Laura then settled the family in Darrington, Washington, where Dennis took on the role of President of the Darrington branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dennis actively contributed to the community and was deeply involved in the church's activities, supporting, and uplifting those around him.
In 2015, having raised their six children to adulthood, Dennis and Laura relocated to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they found peace and happiness. Despite the challenges he faced in his later years, Dennis cherished the time spent with his family and embraced each moment with love and grace. He continued to be kind, loving, and generous to the end.
Dennis William Grimmer is survived by his devoted wife, Laura, their six children, and thirteen adoring grandchildren. His memory will forever live on in their hearts, and his legacy of strength, charity, and love will continue with all those who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on July 1, 2023, at the LDS Church building located at 5169 Denning Ave, Iona, ID 83427. The interment will be at Iona Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (www.heros.vfw.org) in Dennis Grimmer's name, as a tribute to his generous spirit and commitment to helping others.
