Dennis Francis Long passed away peacefully on June 12, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 78. Born on July 30, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, Dennis lived a life filled with curiosity, creativity, and quiet generosity.
Dennis proudly served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1972. A gifted engineer, he went on to work for 3M, Stryker, DiHo, and TBS, contributing to groundbreaking work in audio and electrical engineering, including helping with the development of the first cochlear implant-a testament to his dedication to innovation and improving lives.
Beyond his career, Dennis had a deep love for building computers and tending to his garden. His backyard was a haven for hummingbirds, whom he fed faithfully-not just for their sake, but for the joy and wonder they brought to those who watched.
He is survived by his children: John Long (wife Olivia, children Lumine Ojeda-Long and Waylon), Faith DeShong, and Candice Starr (husband Chris Starr, children David, Adora, and Sage). He also leaves behind the memory of his parents, Elizabeth and William Long, who preceded him in death.
Dennis will be remembered for his intelligence, his inventive spirit, and his quiet devotion to the things-and people-he loved. His legacy lives on in the humming wings of the birds he fed, the machines he built, and the family who carries his memory forward.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, July 1st at 2:00 PM at Riverside Funeral Home, located at 225 San Mateo Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. Phone: (505) 225-8282.
A Veteran Memorial Service with military honors will follow in late July or early August at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. Final date and time to be announced.
