Dennis Swift Obituary

Dennis grew up in southeast New Mexico, just west of the Texas border and not far from Roswell and White Sands National Park - which he, always ready to interject some humor, would often describe as looking like 100,000 square miles of kitty litter. He was the second of three sons born to Lawrence (Larry) Swift and Charlene (Dye) Swift.

In High School Dennis developed rapidly academically, athletically, and spiritually. His range of knowledge and talent ran so wide that while he would eventually major in theology and ministry, he earned a full culinary scholarship offer. He was also a gifted long distance runner, qualifying for the Olympic Trials in marathon. And when he was just sixteen years old, he prayed to receive Christ at a James Robeson evangelism event and answered a divine calling to preach from that day forward.

Dennis studied for multiple degrees at six different universities and colleges, completing his B.A. and M.Div. at Point Loma Nazarene University and Th.D. from University of South Africa. Over a remarkable 50 year period, he pastored churches in Missouri, California, and Oregon, notably answering the call of the Lord to plant Church of All Nations in Portland, Oregon, after 17 years leading Beaverton Church of the Nazarene. He preached passionately through November 2022, stretching for the finish line beyond what his physical body could handle.

Known as "Dr. Dino" to thousands worldwide, Dennis' charismatic storytelling, humor, unique discoveries, treasure trove of artifacts, and photographic memory captivated adults and children alike. Dennis launched the longest running, most attended creation conference, the Northwest Creation Conference, gaining recognition as a subject matter expert in dinosaur and ancient human archaeology.

He appeared in various tv shows and publications in the US, Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, and Russia for his work in this field. He authored the book "Secrets of the Ica Stones and Nazca Lines" after decades of research and discoveries in Turkmenistan, Peru, Bolivia, Mexico, Cambodia, Israel, and his beloved southwestern United States. Dennis was well known for always looking for the opportunity to minister to those in need when he worked in these locations, coming to gain the name "el Super Pastor" in the communities surrounding Nazca, Peru.

Dennis retired to Georgia near his daughter (Rory), son-in-law (Lee), and their 6 children. Dennis was preceded by his beloved wife Sharon (Kendall) Swift and is survived by Rory, Lee, Elisha (19), Eva (17), Maisey (15), Willoughby (13), Ahijah (11), and Titus (4) Cookman; his daughter Jenna (Swift) Dukes; and his son Joel, daughter-in-law Ellie, with their children Nolan (11), Nolan (8), and Emery (1) Swift. He will be missed greatly by thousands worldwide including his church members, creation conference attendees, family, friends, marathon running mates, and staff at every Mexican restaurant in the greater Beaverton area.

Rory, Jenna & Joel. I am sorry to hear about your Dad. I was in prayer group last night and thinking about BNC so I thought I would look to see info. I am so thankful for your parents. Your dad loved people and teaching & preaching about Jesus. I often said his teaching was so valuable to me as was his preaching. I also still have some of the notes I took in your Mom's ladies bible study. How many times through the years I have told people about the creation conferences and seeing Ken Ham before he became a household name. I learned about spiritual warfare and the importance of prayer walking. The times of corporate fasting and 24 hour prayer vigils. So many times I have been so thankful for being led to BNC when I moved from Dallas to Oregon. When I moved to Houston, I worked with someone who ran track with your dad, and called him "Swifty". Eternally thankful for his vision to take church members to Israel. What a trip that was!! The first dig he went on and it was full of secular people, we wondered how many would come home saved. I am sure his greeting committee to heaven was full of people who know the Lord because of your Dad. I can imagine he is entertaining those around him and that his fire insurance joke is still a hit. His personality was entertaining but his message about Jesus was rock solid. No doubt, your parents heard "Well done". Thank you for the family time you sacrificed while your parents were serving a congregation who didn't hesitate to reach out with their needs. I pray that God gives you an extra blessing of His presence in this season of grief. I know this was the first birthday without your dad and I will be saying prayers for you as you go through these firsts or anytime you come to mind. It has been a lot of years since I was at BNC, but I have never stopped being thankful for all of those years.

Bitter Sweet to learn of my friend Dennis' graduation. Sad because the world will be without him now and I will miss him, but happy he is now with our Lord and his beloved wife he was so lonely without. I became friends with Dennis in 2015 when he learned I was a Photographer and we lived only 5 minutes away from each other. He asked if I would photograph his ICA stones for an article he was writing for the Journal of Creation December issue 2016. Me and my 4 year old son went to his house, photographed his amazing ICA stones. Dennis was so kind he gave my son some books, and I received several copies of his Secrets of the Ica Stones and Nazca Lines. Until we meet again my brother in Christ.

Lee, Rory and Family
It will be a long time for me, to replace the value that Dennis and Sharon provided for me. Hoping they know what they have meant to those that got a chance to really know them and what they represented. As ambassador's of Christ seeking to go deeper and passing on what they found into others, paying the price as well. People, friends that turned away even after God's miracles and wonders where shown to them. Dennis who never sought to form a church, blessed by God in doing so. Trials and tribulations along the way since New Mexico, starting with a pair of brown shoes from a thrift store. Dennis a NW Creation Conference for over 30 years and beside him the Queen of Beaverton Sharon, who never divulge to others of her own suffering and gave advice to the lowly servant the "Rev Whitfield". Gone are the insights I can gain from the two of them, but not the memories.....Thank you for being with me and sharing your part of my journey for the last 31 years. See ya soon.

This obituary is well written and moving. As a peer that knew Dennis well over many years of collaborating on creation research, I would only add that Dennis seemed at his finest when leading creation tours in Peru. I've included photos from a couple of trips there. Anybody that joined him for a tour will immediately identify with the pic of Dennis at the microphone, explaining (typically with a bit of dry humor) where we were going and all about the significance of the archaeology. He had a big heart and typically would combine research with charitable work, like bringing suitcases of shoes for impoverished Peruvians. He also made a big impact on creation leaders around the world with his discoveries and insights. Dennis was a dear friend and will be sorely missed! "Dino Dave" Woetzel

It was a joy to have Dennis Swift as our Pastor for many years and to serve under his leadership on missions trips and on the worship team. His love for God, his flock and the nations was one that was clearly evident to all who met him. He was selfless, kind, tenacious, and not afraid to speak God´s truth, no matter the cost. He is missed, but we look forward to being reunited with him and Sharon someday again. Thank you to the Swift and Cookman family for sharing your father and grandfather with so many. We are blessed to know him and to have been witness to the legacy he´s left. Love to you all.
