Obituary published on Legacy.com by George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home - Dedham on Mar. 3, 2026.
Dennis J. Teehan Sr of Dedham, Ma passed away peacefully at home on 03/02/2026. Dennis lived an amazing life and will forever be known for his contributions to his family and his community. His generosity and kind spirit shined throughout his life.
Dennis, known to many as ""The Chief,"" was a proud Law Enforcement Officer, a devout Roman Catholic and a Patriot's season ticket holder for over three decades. Dennis had many amazing achievements in his life, but the one that he loved the most and was the most proud of was his family. He was a family man first.
Married on September 26,1976, Dennis was the devoted husband of Marie Nackley Teehan for 49 years. They were a true love story, with Irish Dennis marrying into a Lebanese family. Dennis and Marie walked side by side through this life in faith and devotion to each other. They were soulmates. Dennis embraced many of his wife's Lebanese traditions and he never let his family leave his presence without asking for a ""Bouseh"" (kiss) or saying ""Allahmaak"" (God be with you).
Marie and Dennis lovingly and joyfully raised their two children Dennis and Lisa at their family home in Oakdale in Dedham. They also proudly helped raise Courtney Holland as their granddaughter. He was also a loving and proud grandfather of Rosemary, Dennis, Adeline and Michael, who he would often take for ice cream, to sporting events or on many unauthorized trips to fast food restaurants. He filled his house with toys and games for them. He was also a loving father-in-law to both John O'Brien and Shannon Teehan.
Dennis was born at Boston City Hospital in 1951. He was the son of Dennis W. Teehan and Mary Flanagan. Dennis first moved to Dedham at 5 years old and attended the Greenlodge School. He was lovingly raised in the Dedham community with his sister Karin, brother Robert, sister Donna and sister Debbie. They have countless memories growing up where Dennis was always up for a game of ball with his brother or a game of store with his sisters. He was a graduate of Dedham High School Class of 1969 and was voted Most Likely to Succeed.
Dennis achieved a degree in Criminal Justice from UMASS Boston and was appointed to Dedham Police Department in 1972. On the night he was appointed his father told him that as policeman he would have the opportunity to do good for people and he should always do good. Dennis took this advice to heart and during his amazing 34 year career as a police officer Dennis did good every day he wore the badge. He did good for the town of Dedham and his fellow police officers who he served admirably with and developed many life-long friendships with. He also served together on the Dedham Police Department with his father for one year.
Dedicated, talented and bright Dennis quickly rose through the ranks of the Dedham Police Department. He earned a Master's degree from Anna Maria College in 1987, balancing the demands of his career, his education and his young family. He was appointed Sergeant in 1980, Lieutenant in 1986 and was appointed the youngest Chief of Police in history of Dedham in 1988 at 37 years old.
Chief Teehan quickly became well known in the Dedham community for his leadership and professionalism. Under his guidance the department adopted a modernized 911 system, helped developed a regional SWAT team and significantly modernized the Department in many ways. He laid the groundwork for the ultimate development of the Town's public safety building. He was known throughout the community for being strong but reasonable and kind. Teehan served on the board of Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association from 1996-2001, acting as president in 2001. He was part of the High Street Blues team that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in the Pan Mass challenge and for the Jimmy Fund. He also reimplemented the Policeman's Ball at Mosley's which gave so many fond memories among family and friends.
Chief Teehan retired from the Dedham Police Department in 2006. He was elected to the Dedham Board of Selectman later that year serving one unexpired term. During this time he worked on several important projects and was instrumental in the building of Legacy Place. It is often said that Legacy Place would not have happened if not for his vision and leadership.
After retirement from the Dedham Police, Chief Teehan found a second career as a Marshall for the Bankruptcy and Moakley Federal Courthouse in Boston. He was well known at Endicott train station for many wonderful conversations on the train platform with his neighbors on the way to work. In his final years he worked at what may have been his favorite job: serving as a bus driver for Dedham Public Schools on his grandchildren's Bus route.
In his personal life the many wonderful memories he shared with his family and friends could fill an entire book. There were Countless nights at his father's pool on Lantern Lane listening to country music with his parents, siblings and many friends and relatives. Cribbage Tournaments. The Dare Tournament. Softball Leagues. Family vacations to Cape Cod, New Hampshire and a few epic trips to Disney. He coached many youth sports teams leading the 1987 Dedham Minor League Royals to an unforgettable championship. He attended many of his children's sporting events spending many spring and summer nights at Baseball fields throughout the region.
He was a longtime New England Patriots fan and season ticket holder. Dennis and Dennis Jr. were blessed to attend hundreds of Patriots games together in Foxboro on many gorgeous fall Sundays. Initially sitting in Section 218 Row 18 Seats 12 and 13 in old Foxboro Stadium before they transitioned to Gillette Stadium. They firsthand watched the Patriots rise from an NFL laughingstock to the greatest dynasty in the history of modern professional sports rarely missing a game in their 34 years as Patriots season ticket holders. They attended two Super Bowl's (both Patriot's victories) and many playoff wins in person.
Dennis proudly guided his children Lisa and Dennis Jr. to degrees at Northeastern University. His sacrifice and support was instrumental in his son completing Medical School (now practicing physician with Beth Israel Lahey Health) and his daughter being an oncology infusion nurse (for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center).
In 2002 Dennis and Marie began to care for a young girl named Courtney Holland. Courtney quickly stole Dennis' heart and became part of the family. The beautiful relationship they cultivated with Courtney brought so much joy for both Dennis and Marie. In 2008 Dennis put a pool in his back yard where Courtney could swim and the Teehan's again could gather and enjoy countless summer days and nights. They held many epic Fourth of July parties. Dennis was also instrumental in helping Courtney achieve her education degree from Salve Regina and she now works as a teacher. He would tell Lisa, Courtney and Dennis how proud he was of them daily.
Dennis was a devout Roman Catholic and a man of faith. He was a proud member of St. Mary's Church serving on the parish council. His faith guided him through the many challenges of his life and most especially through his difficult final days when he fearlessly faced death with grace and courage.
While we celebrate Dennis' transition to heaven, we also know it will leave an indelible hole in the hearts of all those who were blessed to have known him and most especially his wife and family. Before his passing he specifically wanted to thank the amazing staff at the Beth Israel Cancer Center in Needham and especially his oncologist Dr. Erin Derose and primary nurse Mary Kent. In lieu of flowers he asked that donations be made to the Cancer Center at Beth Israel Needham. (Donations can be sent to 148 Chestnut Street, Needham MA. 02492. Attention: Anna Marinilli. Or donations can be made online at Donate to BIDMC and selecting The Needham Cancer Center as the recipient.)
Dennis lived a life of love, warmth, joy, success and celebration. He was a true Dedham legend. He will truly be missed by those who loved him until they are reunited in Heaven. His family invites all to come celebrate his life with us with visiting hours on Monday March 9 at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St, Dedham from 3PM-8PM and Funeral Mass in St Mary's, Church, Dedham on Tuesday March 10 at 10AM. Interment in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham. While Dennis has transitioned to heaven he will continue to shine as an angel for all whom he loved and where he can exist free from illness and full of the energy, joy and spirit that defined his life.
