Dennis Lee Underwood, devoted husband, father and friend, age 85, passed away peacefully on Nov. 24, 2024, at the Warner Center for Caring in Fernandina Beach, Fla.
He was born Nov. 11, 1939, and grew up in San Diego, Calif. He played football for the championship Helix High School team and continued playing as offensive guard for the University of Arizona Wildcats, where he also earned his degree in Business. He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Anne, and they were happily married for 62 wonderful years. He worked exclusively for Exxon Mobil for 38 years. He retired in Fernandina Beach, Fla., and enjoyed staying busy, working in the yard and making new friends.
Dennis was a lifelong football enthusiast. While he played when he was young, when his children were growing up, he could be found coaching Pop Warner and refereeing high school games. In later years, he enjoyed watching football with family, especially the Gators and the Wildcats.
He prided himself on a well-manicured lawn and found peace in the simple joys of hard work and nurturing. Whether mowing the lawn, planting flowers or completing his wife's "honey-do list," Dennis took pride in creating a home where family and friends always felt welcome to gather and enjoy time together.
Dennis was well-traveled and never met a stranger wherever he went. He made lifelong friendships around the country - from the east coast to the west. Throughout his life, Dennis took an active role in the lives of everyone around him and his caring nature will certainly be missed.
You could often find him on the front porch greeting neighbors, giving treats to the neighborhood dogs or fixing up something in the yard. Dennis enjoyed helping others and spending his time surrounded by loved ones. He drove for the American Cancer Society, became the go-to yard guy at Savannah Grand while his mother was a resident, enjoyed playing golf with the guys, being chauffeur to everyone and was the family's master taco cooker. He kept everyone entertained with his funny stories and dry humor.
Above all, Dennis cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, proud father and great Papa. He always put his family first, and his wisdom, kindness and humor will remain a lasting gift to those who knew him.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Furn Underwood and Mildred (George) Underwood Heckard; and brother, Ned Underwood. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Anne, his children, Patty Broussard and David (Judy) Underwood; his grandchildren, Sydney (Mark) Mangen, Bailey Broussard, David Lee Underwood, Emily Underwood and Jon Roc Underwood; and great-granddaughter, Merritt Anne Mangen. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and friendships.
Services will be held at a later date. The family asks that you honor his memory by spending time outdoors, sharing a football game with loved ones or simply cherishing the small joys that life offers.
