Dear Tracy and family; I remember what a GREAT swimmer Derek was. I remember sitting in a boat with my life jacket and I was only about 8 or 9. And Derek swam behind the boat while the boat crossed the lake. Another memory was when Derek was about 16yo. and he slept in the top bunk and Jeff and I had the bottom bunk. I remember his long shaggy red hair hanging off his bunk and I'd yank his hair and hope to get Jeff in trouble for it. And my BEST memory was Derek comforting me in his time of need when I should have been comforting him near the end..Love Danny

Dear Tracy, Fred and family,

Derek was one of my best friends from kindergarten to high school. Since hearing of his passing I have been flooded with great memories of growing up as a northsider with him.
I feel I just want to attest to the fun and full life I’m sure Derek had growing up in our neighborhood by Fowell Park. I know if Derek had half the fun I did(and I’m sure he probably had twice as much) then we can count ourselves very fortunate. I have such great memories of being friends with Derek. He was just a really fun guy to know and it seemed like we were always laughing and always on the go. I feel blessed to have had him as my friend.

Tracy, Thinking back to the days of when life was all about having as much fun as we could. Derek, Denny, Tony, Gronquist, and all the rest of us. Really the stories of good times, go on and on. I know there were a few nights in there, when the smoke cleared, and everyone else was partied out, there stood Phenow and Barrett, cleaning up the spoils. Gotta remember the good times. My heart goes out to you. Derek was such a fun life loving man. He will be missed!
