Derek Wayne Gross, 40, of South Bend, IN., passed away at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday, February 10th, 2026, at his home surrounded by his close family.

Derek was born on September 26th, 1985, in Niles, MI., to Scott A. Gross and Valerie K. Mann.

Derek worked mainly in the food industry in the kitchen.

Derek is survived by his mother Valerie Mann of South Bend. His daughters Ajah Gross of Colorado and Kenna Gross of South Bend. His siblings Christopher Mann, Danielle Mann, Tyler Gross, all of South Bend and Madison Gross of Mishawaka.

Derek was an avid sports fan and loved the game of basketball. He played basketball from a young age with his younger brother from the sun rising to setting almost every day. He shared the love of the game also with his father Scott, nephew Laif and close friends. He frequented NBA games with his brother Chris and always supported his nephew in middle school games.

He enjoyed time outside with long walks early in the morning listening to music. He loved all genres of music, from classic rock to rap/hip hop. In his spare time, he delighted in reading books. He read book after book from biographies of famous and influential leaders, entertainers, and innovators, offering deep insights into their lives and legacies, along with professional athletes and sporting events, world history and the history of the mafia his personal favorite.

His daughters he held dear to his heart. He loved to spend time and create lasting memories with them. He had unwavering love and affection for them both. He enjoyed spending time together with all his family and always created a world where family was most important.

A celebration of life will be held on April 4th, 2026, at The Res, 13950 Scout Ln, Mishawaka, IN 46544.

Cremation has taken place. Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend is assisting the family.
