My sincerest condolences., we knew Derek when we lived in Waimamalo, in the 70's . My mother , brother (Monte Jarnaghan) , and myself. Monte and Derek were friends and I was a tag along, since my brother watched me while my mom worked . My first experience surfing when I was 5 yrs old was with those 2. He was a great kid. I never forgot him. I even named one of my sons after him.. we lost contact after moving to California. . RIP.

Derek, you have carved a beautiful track in many peoples hearts just as you carve a beautiful path for all surfers. This all reflective of the path you carved continuously in all the waves you embraced from mother nature and our beautiful ohana.

I did not really know you Derek, but from a distance , I admired all the Ho Family. i grew up surfing sandy beach portlock point and queens , being trained by Ben also surfing kaisers alot . my earlier days kept me on the north shore , sister dated rory, we lived right on pipeline then moved to papailoa road. From wanting to be a professional surfer , I went and followed the other side of the Ho Family with Don Ho and Remi entertainment . Anyhow , my deepest condolences , and may God bring you comfort for the whole family. Once again thanks Derek for all you have done for the sport , and the legacy you have left which will always continue.
