Hudson Funeral Home & Cremation Services - DurhamDerick Alan Godwin, 55, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, November 22, 2026. His sudden death did not go without Derick still being able to help someone, as his organs were donated to help others and save their lives.
Mr. Godwin was born on April 14, 1970, in Durham, NC, to George “Joe” and Sherri Jones Godwin. He worked for many years in construction, doing vinyl siding and home improvement, and working on cars.
Derick was a patriotic man with a deep sense of pride in his country and those who served to protect it. This went hand in hand with his stern disposition and protective nature toward those who were vulnerable, especially children, the elderly, and animals.
He had a special bond with animals. Derick had two dogs, Trump and Vladimir, that he loved like his own children. It would not be unusual for Derick to find a stray that looked hungry or abused and pick it up to take home. He loved the animals' loyalty and the love they returned for giving them a home. Derick was not a rich man, but he was known to see someone on the street in need and would get them a meal or a little money to buy food. An act of kindness was normal for him, not planned; it was his kind heart that led him to do helpful things for others.
Mr. Godwin had a troubled past, but in God’s time, he became faithful to and loved his Lord and Savior. He read his Bible daily and would share his favorite scriptures with others. Derick would mentor others and was available to those who were in need.
Derick was an avid movie watcher of all genres. He was known for recording many movies to share with others, movies he thought were good and would interest them. He lived at home with his parents to help care for his father, who was recovering from cancer and multiple surgeries. He enjoyed cooking and loved food, trying new dishes from recipes he browsed online.
Mr. Godwin will be remembered as a genuinely kind man who was analytical and courageous, headstrong, and outspoken. In his memory, he would want us all to pay kindness forward, love and care for your animals, stand up and fight for your country, and most of all, let Jesus be most important in your life.
Derick is survived by his parents, George “Joe” and Sherri Godwin; aunt Margot Hayes (Don), daughter, Cheryl Collette; sister, Faith Dullaghan (Emmett); brothers, Joey Godwin (Rachel) and Marcus Godwin; 3 grandchildren, 7 nieces and nephews, 2 great nieces, 3 great nephews, cousins and other loving family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Palace Pointe in Roxboro, NC. Following the service, you are welcome to join us in watching a comedy movie, popcorn and refreshments will be provided.
