Derrill Pope Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Myers & Smith Funeral Home & Chapel on Feb. 26, 2026.
Derrill William Pope passed away February 21st in Dallas Tx, peacefully after a long struggle with health issues. Derrill was a great man and never met a stranger and he could strike up a conversation with anyone. He spent his whole life working the oilfields of Texas and New Mexico. He started as a floor hand and through a long career of hard work and perseverance he eventually became a drill site supervisor company man for XTO Energy. He appreciated the solitude working out in the middle of nowhere watching the sunrise, the sunsets, and the storms roll across the sky. Everyone he ever worked with made an impact on his life. The time spent at work became a treasure of fond memories and the stories he loved to tell. He lived and breathed oilfield and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan.

Family was everything to Derrill. He was the 7th child of Harold & Edna Pope. He met his wife, Cherie, when he was 21 and she was 17. One month to the day of their first date, they were married. 44 years later they are still together and more in love for all the reasons God and time gave them.

Derrill is survived by Cherie, his wife of 44 years, sons David (Randi) and Derreck (Crystal), and daughter Kaylea (Efrain) and a niece who was like a daughter, Jennifer (Larry). Six grandchildren: Aiden Pope, Jacik Salgado, KaRihanna Moore, Layla Pope, Jailea Salgado and Brynlea Pope. Our extended family through love, Dan & Melissa Thomas and their children Mallory, Josh, Kaylin and Dani. Numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Surviving siblings are Natta Wood, Sharon Cavazos (Paul) and Jim Pope (Mary). Waiting to greet him in heaven are his parents, sisters Shirley, Linda and brother Michael.

Honorary Pallbearers: Sonny Trevino, Mark Clark, Scott Simpson, Bobby Williams, Mike Johnson, James Averritt.

All the sacrifices he made to provide for his family are cherished memories now. We will miss him, his humor and silly jokes, if you knew him, you've heard a few. To everyone that knew him, Thank you for being his friend. Go rest now, you fought the good fight, and we will see you on the other side.

Memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, March 2, 2026 at Myers & Smith Funeral Home Chapel.

Arrangements are by Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Pay your respects online at www.myersandsmith.com
