Devon P. Seymour Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 11, 2005.
Devon Seymour was responsible and determined, even when he was a child. "He wanted a dog, so what he did was, he cut pictures out of magazines," said his father, James. "Every time you opened a door, there would be a dog." The family adopted a poodle-terrier mix, and later a German shepherd. Seymour, 21, of St. Louisville, Ohio, was killed June 9 in an explosion in Haqlaniyah. The reservist was based in Akron, Ohio. As a boy, Seymour liked to wear khaki and camouflage and had an avid interest in airplanes. He decided to join the Marine Reserves during his senior year of high school, after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. "He took his birth certificate in and he was too young," James Seymour said. He enlisted after he turned 18 and briefly attended Ohio State University and worked as a truck driver. He died a year after his father, an Ohio National Guardsman, returned from duty in Afghanistan. Devon's mother, Janet Seymour, said her son "was one of the good and decent people willing to help somebody. He was worth knowing."

Devon, it really hit home how much time has gone by since you've been gone. I remember writing you about how many of your cousins were expecting at the same time. Those 4 kids all graduated this year from high school. Wow. It just seems like yesterday that we drove to Ohio for your high school graduation. I took the flowers up to the cemetary and will be there tomorrow for the Memorial Day ceremony. ❤ Mary

Devon, (and Family and Friends)
My husband, Gary, and I work for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) in St. Louis, Missouri. I received your name on my Memorial Day card and Poppy yesterday as part of our remembrance activities. I am so thankful to have met you, but not in this way. I thank you and your family for your sacrifices that allow me and my family to have the life we have today. My husband and I served in the Air Force, I myself joining at the age of 22 in February 2001, right before 9\11. We are proud to have served with you at the same time. We now live in a small town close to my home of record; we have twins, 12 year old, boy and girl. We searched for you to honor and learn more about you and the time we had you blessing us all here on Earth. We are all so thankful to learn about you and the amazing young man you are with a heart full of unwaivering love and patriotism. You have inspired us all and have touched my childrens hearts in which they will carry with them as.well as within us. Thank you for touching our hearts and being with us today forward. You are loved and never forgotten. Peace be with you. Till Valhalla Brother! -Melinda Meek

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Seymour Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Three years have passed and yet it seems like yesterday. I see a flag waving in the breeze and I think of you-proud and strong. Today I saw a little blond haired boy and he said "hi" so sweetly as I walked by. I thought of you. I started noticing the Red-winged Blackbirds since you've been gone-the stripe on the wing reminds me of you. Your memory will forever live on. Thank you for your sacrifice dear Devon. Love and miss you.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Devon, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

January 15, 2008

Our deepest sympathy to the Seymour family. Our hearts go out to you and yours. Just came upon this article and felt the need to let you know that we know how broken hearted you are as we have experencied the same loss. We lost our grandson in Iraq in 2006. Devon gave the ultimate sacrifice for us as so that we can remain a free nation. God bless Devon and God Bless America. May Devon rest in the loving arms of Jesus Christ where he is whole and there are no more tears. We are proud of all our military as they do what others are not willing to do. All through history there are these very special men and now women who keep America free. Thank you!

I am so sorry for this loss. It hurts so much to see such a young, alert, anxious for life, face peering out from under his hat in the photo.

Father we entrust our brother Devon to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Devon in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

Devon-
It's been quite a while, but there are times when I still think of your company. I wanted to let you and your family know that I dedicated a speech in your honor for a class I'm taking in college. At first I didn't know what to say, or just how to say it. It was hard, but I ended up with something I considerd decent. I want you to know how much I appreciated your service, and now others who didn't know you can do the same. You were a wonderful person with a beautiful heart, and I will never forget that about my friend. Thank you.

August 19, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

We are so sorry for your loss. Devon is a hero with the great Marines down through the years that have gone into danger without a second thought. He will never be forgotten. For many here are present
Who'd give life for a friend,
But who would make that sacrifice
In order to defend
Strangers who never knew you
Or even heard your name;
He felt a higher calling
Beyond this earthen frame.
For when the bombs were flashing
That day along the road,
He paid the price of freedom,
A seed of faith was sowed.

To the family and Friends of LCpl. Devon Seymour,

My heart and prayers go out to you. No words can describe the heart ach that you are feeling, but please know that Devon did not die in vain.

I lost a friend with the 3/25 at Hit, in April, and that hurt is still there. Yet I know that he gave his life doing what he loved, so others could live free. Devon did the same.

I can never say that I know or understand the pain that you must feel, but I do know this: men like Devon will never be forgotten. They will live on through those who hear their stories.

My prayers are with you.

Every night while watching the World News on CBS, I pause and say a prayer after the Fallen Hero sgement for the soldier and their family.

I was deeply touched by the segment about Devon. When I heard Devon's biography, I thought that they were talking about my 15 yr old son, Tyler. The similiar character traits were unbelievable. Tyler was determined to get a dog and did the same as Devon with the pictures. We have a poodle/schnauzer mix. Tyler loves camouflage and loves airplanes, especially war planes. My son has mentioned joining the service when he is old enough.

My heart goes out to the Seymour Family. May you find peace in knowing Devon is amongst the angels!

Thank you and God Bless You!

July 7, 2005

Dear Janet, Jim, and Lachelle,

Grandma Winkelman (Beady) just told me of Devon's death, and I want to express my sincerest condolences. I'm Mike Winkelman's daughter, Amy. I met Devon only once, at Grandpa's (Marlin's) funeral, and I know they had become very close in Grandpa's last few years. Devon meant so much to Marlin and Beady too, and she was so saddened to tell me of his death. Even having met him only once, it hurt to hear of his loss. I found his info online and it is obvious Devon was well-loved by everyone, and was a generous and loving young man. Sometimes it is in times of such great distress that our faith is tested most; know that God holds you in His loving hands, and your family and community are there to support you in any way possible.

You remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Brigette Pratt

I DON'T REMEMBER YOU AND I DON'T RECALL MEETING DEVON BUT WHEN MY FATHER (RAYMOND SEYMOUR) TOLD ME ABOUT YOUR LOSS I FELT SO CRUSHED. NO MATTER HOW DISTANT OF RELATION DEVON WAS TO ME, HE WAS STILL FAMILY.I DON'T KNOW IF YOU REMEMBER THAT I LOST A SON 14 YEARS AGO AS A BABY BUT STILL LOSING A CHILD AT ANY AGE IS DEVASTATING.I CAME ACROSS ONLINE IN THE "ADVOCATE" WEBSITE THE ARTICLE OF DEVON'S DEATH AND WHEN I SAW HIS MARINE PICTURE MY EYES FILLED WITH TEARS. I PRINTED IT OFF AND HAVE IT WITH MY KEEPSAKES.I'M TERRIBLY SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR SON. I'M SURE HE STOOD TALL WITH PRIDE AND DIGNITY KNOWING HE WAS DOING WHAT HE LOVED AND KNOWING YOU WERE PROUD OF HIM TOO.

Dear friends & family of LCPL Seymour,

I was at the Haditha Dam when the Assault Amphibious vehicles brought Devon and his 3 fallen friends in. Chaplain Malmstrom put his hand on Devon's shoulder and said a prayer. We continue to pray for the friends and family of our Marines who have paid the ultimate price, as we continue to grieve for them ourselves. I had seen Devon just the day before he died. Men from his company tell me Devon was a great gunner. He died with honor, and, in fact, we are adding him to our Wall of Honor at Camp Hit. We are thankful for the opportunity to have shared a portion of his life. May God bless you and watch over you during this time and always.

Sincerely,

Battalion Surgeon, 3/25

Our prayers are with your family at this most trying time. Devon paid the ultimate sacrifice and he will never be forgotten, we will all remember what an honorable man he was. My husband had the good fortune of being his CO and spoke very highly of him. He will forever be remembered for the oustanding Marine that he was. I can tell you that he has a place forever in our hearts. God Bless you and all you have sacrificed. The Catalano Family

As a former Marine and active Navy reservist, I am thankful for Devon's sacrifice. I never met Devon, but I am sure he is in a much safer place now. Gods Speed to the Seymour family.

As the current and previous Commanders of the Civil Air Patrol squadron Devon belonged to as a teen we can attest to the fact that he planned on being a Marine for a very long time! One can take comfort in knowing that he became the Marine he always dreamed of being and that he died doing what he believed in. We feel honored to have been part of his life if only for a short time and we are proud of the man he became.
