Dick Dee Demerly, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, went to meet his Lord on November 21, 2025, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Born on November 8, 1942, in Owosso, Michigan, to the late Shirley Lyle and Dorothy Evelyn (Wilson) Demerly, Dick's life was a testament to hard work, family values, and community service.
A proud graduate of Perry High School's class of 1960, Dick furthered his education by studying agriculture at Michigan State University. His passion for farming was not just a profession but a way of life. Dick spent his life as a farmer, nurturing the land and serving his community. Seen as a pioneer in his field, he often adopted new farming practices well before they were common. He was the owner of Rising View Farms, the same farm he grew up on and took over from his dad, and in turn was passing on to his son, Chris, and grandson, Wyatt. Dick and Chris later took the helm of Corunna Mills in 2004, along with their wives Janet and Jamie. Known as a true gentle giant, Dick's dedication to agriculture was recognized early on when he became the first ever recipient from the Perry FFA Chapter of the American Farmer Degree, an honor that filled him with immense pride.
On June 27, 1964, Dick married the love of his life, Janet Sue West. Together, they built a family and a legacy that would touch many lives, and also produce many FFA members. Dick is survived by his devoted wife, Janet, and their children, Kaye (Tony) Canfield, Ross (Tina) Demerly, Jon (Jennifer) Demerly, and Chris (Jamie) Demerly. His legacy continues through his 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way), all of whom brought him immense joy.
Dick's life was marked by his commitment to his community and his faith. He served for 30 years on the Bennington Township Planning Committee, where his wisdom and foresight helped shape the future of the area he so loved. A life member of the FFA and the Perry FFA Alumni, Dick's influence on the agricultural community will long be remembered. His involvement with the Heart of Michigan Antique Tractor Club allowed him to combine his love for farming with his passion for history, crossing the Mackinac Bridge many times on his tractor in a display of tradition and camaraderie.
A steadfast member of the Pittsburg Methodist Church for 60 years, Dick's Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and his commitment to serving others. His friendly nature, handy skills, hard work and wise counsel made him a beloved figure in his community and beyond.
Dick leaves behind his brothers, David Demerly and Edwin (Martha) Demerly, and his sister, Sally (Dale) Thompson. He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Lynnette, his granddaughter Grace, and his sister Judy Stotenbur. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Dick's life was one of purpose and impact, marked by the love he had for his family and the land he tended. As we remember Dick, we celebrate a life well-lived, a man who was the embodiment of friendliness, handiness, and wisdom.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 520 W. Main St. Owosso. The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025 at the funeral home from 2:00pm-8:00pm and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Memorial contributions can be directed to the Perry FFA or the Pittsburg Methodist Church.
