Dilip Kumar Bhaumik May 5, 1940 – November 10, 2025
Dilip Kumar Bhaumik, 85, of Piermont, New York, formerly of Ellicott City and Clarksville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 10, 2025, in Cresskill, New Jersey, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on May 5, 1940, in Tura, Meghalaya, India, Dilip graduated from Bengal Engineering College before immigrating to the United States in 1969. He pursued graduate studies in architecture and city planning at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., laying the foundation for a long and meaningful career in the field he loved.
Dilip began his career in private architectural practice, including work on National Geographic's Washington headquarters in 1984. A member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), he later devoted the remainder of his professional life to public service as an architect for the State of Maryland.
Outside of his professional life, Dilip was a man of wide-ranging creativity and culture. He was deeply passionate about Bengali literature and music, publishing multiple literary works, including a book of poems titled Markin Naba Barsha("American New Year"). A gifted musician, composer, and lyricist of Bengali music, he played the tabla and the flute, and wrote songs for Kolkata All India Radio; to this day, schoolchildren in India learn music based on some of his compositions.
Dilip was also an extraordinarily skilled woodworker and craftsman. When he was not reading, writing, or listening to music, he could often be found in his woodshop or working on projects around the house. The care, patience, and artistry he brought to his craft live on in the hands and hearts of his three grandsons, who have inherited his love of making things with care and intention.
Dilip is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Juthika Roma; his daughter, Debjani "Debi" Rao; his son-in-law, Sandeep Rao; and his three cherished grandsons, Devin, Rayan, and Neil, all of Piermont, NY. He is also survived by his brother, Niren Bhaumik of Bangalore, India, in-laws Navanita Bhaumik of Greenville, SC, and Rita and Amitava Ghosh of Potomac, MD, and many nieces and nephews. Beyond his family, Dilip was an active and beloved member of the Bengali communities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., where his time, talents, and warmth will be missed in community life.
He was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers, including his younger brother Dipankar of Greenville, SC, who passed away in August 2025.
A private funeral service with Hindu rites will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. A celebration of life will be held in Maryland at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dilip's memory to the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center of New York, 17 East 94th Street, New York, NY 10128.
May his soul find peace and continue its journey. Om Shanti.
