Dixie Carpenter Obituary

May 10, 1936 - February 17, 2023 Vista Dixie Juanita Carpenter (nee Thayer) was born on May 10, 1936 in Fillmore, Ventura County, California. A 4th generation Californian, she met Daniel Carpenter and married on Dec. 22, 1955. When Dan was recruited into the Army for the Korean War, Dixie joined the Women's Army Corp to fulfill her obligation to her country. Mrs. Carpenter raised four children: Stacey C. Carpenter Al-Ghawas, Stephen H. Carpenter, William (Bill) B. Carpenter and Phillip B. Carpenter. She is also a grandmother to Saad, Layla and Khaled Al-Ghawas and a great-grandmother to Luay and Meshal. Dixie was an active education rights advocate in the Manhattan Beach community. She served on various committees related to school curriculum and even campaigned for a council position on the school board. She was an avid volunteer for educational and sports groups in the community. In 2005, Dixie and Dan moved to Vista California to enjoy their retirement years near their sons Stephen and Bill. She was an active member of the neighborhood and spent her energy creating a beautiful garden for all to enjoy. Dixie passed away on February 17, 2023 in Vista. She will be laid to rest at Miramar National Cemetery on March 7th at 10:15am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to The White Helmets to provide aid to the Syrian Earthquake victims be made in her name. Please contact [email protected] with any queries.

Mom, you taught me to be independent and strong. You had a love of nature and animals that set me on the path to biology. You were vocations and fun, generous and kind. You were a loving grandmother to my children who cherish you. Thank you for supporting and loving me. God rest your soul in peace.

I went to school with Dixie in Fillmore Calif. We walked back and forth to school. I remember her well.

It was always a treat talking to Dixie. We shared similiar political ideas and it was nice being able to share our dismay. She always spoke of her family with such love and pride. We will miss her warm smile and humor.

To the Carpenter family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories Dixie when we all lived on Third St. I know she remained friends with my Mom (Jean) throughout the years in clubs and education. I just realized she moved to Vista as did my parents. I bet my mom wished she had learned this and wonder if she was a member of the Vista Garden club as my Mom was? Well, now they can team up and take care of the gardens up above. Deepest sympathies and my condolences- Jeri Mandelbaum
