I met Governor Briscoe through my grandfather Hub Bechtol when I was about 5 years old. He gave me a lunchbox with his name on it- that I carried all through kindergarten. He also gave me a five dollar bill and told me to put it in the bank. I have always held on to that- Rest in Peace Governor and condolences to the Family. He was a rare breed- they don't make them like that anymore.
God Bless,

I actually know of him based on stories about Louise Briscoe from Barbara White of Charles Town WV. Barbara always had stories of the Briscoes and Piedmont (family home in WV for over 200+ years). She was very proud of Dolph and I am sure he will be missed. God Bless the Family.

A great man and a great Governor, from a beautiful state. I really did appreciate his remarks made to the Texas Dept. of Public Safety, about not being able to see much of Texas driving @ 55-MPH. I visited Texas with California License Plates; and enjoyed traveling across the big beautiful state of Texas; of course, driving speeds faster than 55-MPH; while the Governor was away on vacation in Europe.

To the Briscoe Family,

I am a Banker in the Houston area and had the great pleasure of meeting with Gov. Briscoe while working for the Texas Dept. of Banking ('77-'81). I was in charge of an exam of Security State Bank in Pearsall (and stayed in Dilley, TX that week). What I remember most about that exam 30 years ago was meeting with Gov. Briscoe at its conclusion to go over our findings; it was an honor for me! He was so gracious and very patient with a young, relatively inexperienced examiner. He also shared that the beautiful antiques adorned the bank and the board room had been picked out by Mrs. Briscoe (I believe on a trip to Europe). I was able to share with him how much I appreciated all he had done as for us as Governor. My prayer for the family is that you will feel God's presence and His peace (Ephes. 2:14) today and the days to come and rememeber that if you've accepted Jessus Christ as Lord you will see Gov. Briscoe again, and that time will be for all eternity!

God Bless you!

Briscoe was a great philanthropist in terms of generous donations to education and health centers to our state universities, and a big what if Briscoe won the primary over Hill and beaten Clements in the general for a 3rd term in 1978.

In 1963, while at UT, I went to work for the Texas Animal Health Commission and Dolph Briscoe Jr. was the chairman. Never having even heard of a "screwworm" I soon learned how they were destroying the cattle industry and how Mr. Briscoe was determined to rid Texas of this problem!! He did a lot for Texas, certainly as governor, but a big part of his legacy must be the eradication of the screwworm. This doesn't sound fancy, but it was extremely important. It was an education for this Austin "city girl"!

Dolph Briscoe and Bill Hobby brought integrity to statewide politics in 1972 at a time when it was needed most. As governor Mr. Briscoe served as he lived with decency and honesty. It was a loss for Texas when he lost his last political race, and finally when he moved on to a higher calling.

Dolph Briscoe. Born on third base, he thought he was still in the on-deck circle. Unpretentious, completely honest, a decorated veteran of WWII, dedicated to his family, State and alma mater, a person who actually served the public while in public office and not himself, the State of Texas owes him a debt of gratitude it cannot repay. Rest in peace, Governor Briscoe, we will not see your like again.

Govenor Briscoe was a great Texan. My family was blessed to have known him. We will always be thankful to him for his steady hand as Gov. and his kindness to us personally. Texas has lost a great one.

You were a highly respected man and you did so much for Texas and people in general. Although we never got to meet you, my father-in-law, Mr. Lionel Chambers talked very highly of you. You were a dear friend to him. Your legacy will live forever. The Briscoe Family should be very Proud.
