To the Harmeling family, Please accept my deepest sympathy on Don's passing. He was a member of the Sentry ball team we played on in Waterford. He was also a teacher of my two sons in high school. But more important he was a good friend. Waterford will miss him, so will I.

WHEN PLAYING FOR LEBANON IN THE ROCK RIVER. WE PLAYED THE LEAGUE ALL STARS IN A GAME. ALTHOUGH DON WAS OUR SECOND BASEMAN, HE VOLUNTEERED TO PITCH THAT GAME SO HE WOULD NOT HAVE TO USE ONE OF OUR REGULAR PITCHERS, HE WON THE MVP OF THAT GAME WHICH MEANT HE HAD TO BUY DRINKS FOR THE ENTIRE LEBANON TEAM. HE SAID IF I KNEW IT WOULD HAVE COST ME THIS MUCH, I WOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN THE MOUND. I AM SORRY THAT DON PASSED BUT HE LEFT BEHIND SOME OF MY GREATEST MEMORIES PLAYING HARDBALL, WHICH I PLAYED FOR 25 YEARS. HE WAS A GREAT MANAGER AS WELL.

Don was a good friend for almost 50 years. Our classrooms at WUHS were right next to each other and Don's morning greeting to me (and everyone) always was his famous "...Great to be alive..." After a while his infectious positive outlook began to rub off on me - thanks, Don! We smelt fished together, we took our sons deer hunting together, we coached intramural basketball together, and in retirement, we shared monthly fish fries together with our wives. Don will be greatly missed.
