Dr. Don Huber passed away on May 16, 2024, after a lifetime of service to his community, leaving a legacy of care, compassion and dedication.
Donald Simon Huber was born on April 18, 1929, in
Clarendon, Pennsylvania, and grew up in
High Point, North Carolina. He attended Duke University, completing an accelerated six-year program that combined undergraduate and medical school. In 1953, he joined the Navy, serving on active duty as a physician and in the reserves for four years. Don was stationed in
Pensacola, Florida, where he met the love of his life, Mary Hanks, on a blind date. After their marriage in 1958, they moved to
New Orleans, Louisiana where he completed his medical residency at Charity Hospital.
In 1960, Don and Mary moved to
Huntsville, Alabama, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the Intensive Care Unit at Huntsville Hospital and implementing the code blue emergency response system. Known for his diagnostic acumen, he practiced internal medicine before specializing in asthma and allergy later in his career.
Dr. Huber felt one of his greatest accomplishments was starting the Community Free Clinic in 1999. His passion for medicine allowed him to retire in 1996 and focus entirely on patient care without the burden of financial considerations. This dedication enabled him to fulfill his life's mission of improving his patients' health. He continued his work at the free clinic, reviewing lab reports and medical charts until the age of 94. At the time of his death, his medical license was still active, and he remained the medical director of the Community Free Clinic.
He provided additional community service through his long dedication to the Rotary Club, mentoring of Lee High School students even in his 80's, serving on the board for the Harris Home for Children and his lifelong participation in the United Methodist Church.
Don was also a devoted family man, deeply committed to his wife of 65 years, as well as his children, grandchildren and even wider and extended chosen family.
Dr. Huber is survived by his wife, Mary Hanks Huber; brother, Ron Huber (Jane); children, Scott Huber (Charlene), Mark Huber (Kayla), Lisa Huber (William Fragakis), Andy Pitman (Pam) and Joyce Pitman Remson (Jackie); grandchildren, Anna Huber Kilbourn (Adam), Sarah Lauren Huber, Don Allen Huber, Emma Huber, Laura Huber (Abby Bates), Simon Fragakis (Megan Hale), Mary Fragakis, Joy Remson Johnson (Jeremiah), Johnny Remson, Jason Pitman (Amanda), Nathan Pitman, Malorie Pitman David (James), Michael Pitman and Angie Pitman Marlow (Caleb), Dodd Mickle and Peyton Anne Green (Colton); and great-grandchildren, Katie Kilbourn, Luke, Nolan and Thomas Barnes, Mya and Hayden Remson, Aiden, Mason and Elias Pitman, Ruby Pitman, Cooper, Colby and Cohen David, Dean and Deliliah Marlow. He was preceded in death by great-grandchild, Westin Pitman. The family is grateful for Don's long-term caregiver, Michael Dove.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Holmes Street United Methodist Church in the sanctuary and a reception immediately following in the Great Room.
