Donald Frank Binkowski of Apple Valley, died Thursday, October 7, 2021, at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center in Minnesota. He was 77 years old.
Don was born on October 24, 1943 in Chicago, IL to parents George and Esther. He enlisted in the Army in 1966, served in Korea in 1966, served in Vietnam as a welder in 1967-1968, and was honorably discharged in 1972. He was a decorated Vietnam vet, and achieved the rank of Sergeant. On December 31, 1971 Don married Irene Imbery at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis. He worked in construction, as a locksmith, repaired telephone systems, and was truly a jack of all trades.
Always a teacher, he patiently shared from his vast experience (and collection of specialized tools) whenever there was an opportunity. Later in his career he drove for Metro Mobility. He refused payment from his riders on his birthday, and would instead pay for the rides himself. Don was an incredibly generous person, selflessly giving throughout his life.
Don is survived by his daughter Rebecca (David) Erickson, Lakeville; former spouse Irene Binkowski; grandson's Viktor and Axel. Don was preceded in death by his parents George and Esther.
Memorial to be held Thursday, October 21st from 5 to 7 pm at Grace Church, 7950 Blaine Ave. Inver Grove Heights MN 55076.
Interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN on Friday, November 26, 2021 at 9:00am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
