Don was born on September 5, 1934, to Russel and Vera Cox in Fargo, ND and grew up on the family farm near Mapleton, ND. He attended District 27 Schoolhouse for his elementary years then Mapleton High School where he graduated in 1953. 

The US Army called Don into service in March of 1958. He was stationed in Ft. Hood, TX for bootcamp before being stationed in Germany where he spent two years. Don was on the rifle team and they performed throughout Germany. He achieved many awards, including Sharpshooter Badge (Rifle), Good Conduct Medal, Expert Infantry Badge, Expert Badge (Bayonet), Sharpshooter Badge (Browning Automatic Rifle), and 1st Class Gunner (30 Caliber Machine Gun). Don was discharged in March of 1964. 

Don married Darlene Larson in September of 1960 in Glyndon Lutheran Church. They made their home in Moorhead and had two children. Darlene passed away in 2013.

Don drove truck his entire working career and spent time with Dickhouse Trucking, Fitzgerald Construction, and finally Georgie Pacific where he spent 17 years until retiring in 1996.

Don is survived by his children, Vicki (Lonnie) Bailie of Glyndon, MN, Dave Cox of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren, Alexandra, Chase, Amber, Blue and Cody; great-grandchildren, Aadyn, Addyson, Tyler, Gannon, Katalaya and Elias.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russel and Vera; wife, Darlene; sister, Mary; granddaughter, Heather, and so many others.
Don went into glory on May 31, 2024. He was 89.

A memorial gathering will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024, from 5 - 6:30 PM with a time for sharing beginning at 6:30 followed by military honors at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead.
