Celebrating the Life of Don Genson
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Donald Kenneth Genson Jr., a devoted husband, dedicated father, cherished grandfather, and beloved friend. He unexpectedly died on December 3, 2025, at the age of 70, in Bowie, MD.
Don’s life was a testament to what it means to spread joy.
Born in Maryland, he was the oldest of 3 boys. As a child, Don enjoyed building model airplanes, playing pool, listening to The Beatles, camping with his family, and playing trombone in the school band. He was an athlete who ran cross-country and played tennis in high school. He loved driving his dad’s blue Chevy Vega.
Don attended Messiah College where he not only pursued a degree, but he met the love of his life Freshman year. Don and Judy enjoyed spending time together on campus, going to basketball games, and hanging out in Gettysburg. Don was a member of the Messiah cross-country team, ping pong team, and Jazz Band. He graduated from Messiah College with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and later earned a Master's Degree in Health and Medical Systems Administration from Widener University.
Throughout his career, Don served in various esteemed positions. Don worked as the Lab Director at DC General Hospital and later, Mount Vernon Hospital. Following the death of his father, he joined his brother, Darren, at the Genson Insurance Agency as a Nationwide Insurance Agent. After retiring, he dedicated his time to serving as the Financial Administrator at St. Matthew’s Methodist Church, where he found joy in his work and a community he cherished.
A dedicated father, from ballet to boy scouts, robotics to piano recitals, Don was always there. He encouraged his children to pursue their dreams and celebrated their achievements. He was the fun dad, who loved to live in the moment with his children. Don set an example for what it meant to be a devoted father and a genuinely good person.
He had a variety of interests and hobbies throughout the years. He remained active in adulthood and continued to play tennis for a long time. He had fun making spreadsheets (for everything!) and used that talent while serving on the finance committee of Christian Community Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. He loved watching Maryland football, calling out the answers to Jeopardy!, and keeping up with the news. He enjoyed playing pool at the Senior Center and the friends he made there. Don loved Diet Coke, tinkering with his Christmas train, trying new recipes, organizing his music, researching the latest computer hardware, planning his next trip with Judy, and daily walks with Buddy, the family dog. Dinners with old friends, s’mores with his grandchildren; it was the simple things that brought him joy. And that is how he spread joy, with little gestures of kindness.
Don was an extremely thoughtful person. He had a remarkable way of making those around him feel special. Whether it was a surprise Hershey kiss, a bouquet of flowers, or even just a warm, friendly greeting, he loved to make the people in his life smile. From scouring the internet for the perfect Christmas gift to making his famous chicken noodle soup, Don found immense joy in lifting up those around him.
Don will be remembered not only for his accomplishments and contributions but, most importantly, for the love he shared, the laughter he brought, and the kindness he extended to all. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Don was preceded in death by his father, Donald Kenneth Genson Sr. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his son, Kevin; his daughter, Laura and her husband Luke; and his six grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother, Jean; his step-father, Richard; his brother, David and his wife Sherrie; his brother, Darren and his wife Peggie; his step-sister Nancy and her husband Jeff; as well as aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, much-loved brother and sister-in-laws, and dear friends.
