Donald Hamous Obituary

DONALD HAMOUS Cedar Rapids Donald Hamous, 91, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, at Cottage Grove Place following a recent illness. Celebration of Life Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday Nov. 13, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW, in Cedar Rapids. Donald was born Aug. 23, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Ladislav James and Vlasta (Liskovsky) Hamous. He graduated from Franklin Senior High School and then attended Cedar Rapids Business College. Don was united in marriage to Irene Naxera on June 6, 1953, in Cedar Rapids. He worked at Iowa National Mutual Insurance Company, retiring in 1985. Donald proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was a dedicated Scouter for over 82 years, earning his Quartermaster Award in Sea Scouting as a youth. He served in many leadership capacities including Cubmaster, Scoutmaster and Explorer Post Advisor. A highlight of his scouting service was cooking for the Order of The Arrow for nearly 50 years. Donald was proud to have his two sons and two of his grandsons earn the rank of Eagle Scout, continuing his legacy. He was a collector, fix it man, lover of playing sports (in his youth), very fond of watching westerns and war movies but, above all, he enjoyed spending time with family, especially at The Cabin. Don and Irene were very proud of their Czech heritage and were long time supporters of The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library. They enjoyed many trips to Europe, especially visiting their relatives in the Czech Republic. Don is survived by his beloved wife, Irene; children, Bruce (Barbara) Hamous of Cedar Rapids and Steve (Janet) Hamous of Wichita, Kan.; five grandchildren, Brandon (Sandy), James (Kayla), Christina (Nick), Racheal (Cole) and Michael (Maggie); nine great-grandchildren; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joanne (Howard) Walrath; and a granddaughter, Sarah. The family requests memorials be directed to The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.broshchapel.com.
