Donald Steven "Don" Hardesty

Donald Steven Hardesty, born on January 15, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan, passed away on September 30, 2025, in Carleton, Michigan, at the age of 73.

Don spent 31 years working as a machine repair journeyman at Ford Motor Company, retiring in 2004. After retirement, he continued doing what he loved-working in his garage building race cars and engines. He was passionate about street racing on Telegraph Road and was a familiar face at Detroit Dragway, where he often raced his iconic yellow Dart. Known as the "OG" at Milan Dragway, Don left his mark on the racing community. He was also a proud Masonic Mason for over 20 years.

Outside of racing, Don had a deep love for travel, especially going on cruises. But nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his grandchildren. From shooting guns to building projects in the garage and racing go-karts, all the wildest adventures seemed to begin with "Papa."

Don lived a full and vibrant life, always optimistic and eager to strike up a conversation with anyone-his go-to opener being, "Are you a car guy?" He faced heart and kidney failure with unwavering strength and courage, never giving up until the very end.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Susan Hardesty; his father, Donald Patz; and his stepfather, Douglas Hardesty.

Donald is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia Hardesty, who stood by his side through every chapter of life. He leaves behind his children, Melissa (Dan) Cordier and Donald (Cari) Hardesty; and his stepchildren, Matthew (Lisa) Kaluzny, Lisa (Matthew) Swanson, and Laura (David) Mitchell. He was a devoted Papa to Trevor, Matthew, Dylan, Gracie-Sue, Landon, Owen, and Ella-all of whom will carry his memory in their hearts.

He is also survived by his mother, Angie Hardesty; his siblings, Gary (Teri) Hardesty, Timothy (Marlaina) Hardesty, and Debbie (Mike) Boskee; as well as many nieces and nephews who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.

Don touched countless lives with his warmth, humor, and unbreakable spirit. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In true Don fashion, he requested a celebration-a party-in his honor. A future date will be announced to gather and remember the man who meant so much to so many.
