Donald Eugene Hartzell, age 89, of Morgantown, WV, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at Sundale Nursing Home. Don was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was born on September 11, 1935, in Morgantown to the late Asa and Sarah Hartzell. He was also preceded in death by his son, Eric Hartzell.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Eleanor Hartzell; stepchildren, Charlie Moran and his wife Tricia, and Sherry Moran and her husband Chris; grandchildren, Shawnee Prewett and her husband Mark, Logan Moran and his fiancée Brianna LeMasters, and Luke Moran and his girlfriend Haley Hart; and great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Moran and William Prewett.
Don served with the Morgantown Police Department for 25 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. He was known for his animated storytelling -especially tales from his days on the force and his childhood on the farm. He loved spending time with his family, going hunting, watching westerns, and was a valued member of Hope Church.
Those who knew Don will remember him as an ornery, stubborn son of a gun. He liked to act tough, and most of the time he pulled it off- but if you really knew him, you saw right through it. He was always cracking jokes and had a way of making his grandchildren laugh. He was a pain sometimes, but he was ours, and we loved him for it. He will be missed dearly.
Family and friends are invited to gather in support of the family at McCulla Funeral Home, 770 Fairmont Rd, Westover, WV on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 from 4-7 pm. Visitation will continue Wednesday, May 14th from 10 am until the funeral service begins at 11 am with Pastor Allen Donham officiating. Following the funeral service, Donald will be laid to rest at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Online condolences may be extended to the family at www.mcculla.com
