Hicks – Donald Ray Hicks, age 70, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on October 3, 2025, at Baptist Medical Center Downtown in Jacksonville. Donald was born in Jacksonville, Florida on January 22, 1955, to the late Ray Hicks and Gladys Thomas Hicks. He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1974. From an early age, Donald loved being outdoors and was a true outdoorsman. He had a deep appreciation for nature, agriculture, and horticulture. He continued his education at the University of North Florida, where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees. Donald went on to have a long and successful career at the University of North Florida, serving as their Grounds Superintendent. In this role, he was instrumental in transforming and maintaining the university's campus into one of the most beautiful and ecologically responsible landscapes in the region. Donald took great pride in preserving green spaces, mentoring young groundskeepers and student interns. When he wasn't working, Donald could almost always be found outdoors pursuing his favorite pastimes-hunting and fishing. A lifelong sportsman, he had an enduring love for the woods and the water. He subscribed to multiple outdoor magazines and was a regular customer of Bass Pro Shops, always eager to learn about the latest gear, techniques, and destinations. Even when he wasn't actively in the field or on the water, Donald immersed himself in the outdoors by watching hunting and fishing shows and reading up on new strategies and conservation efforts. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the sport were unmatched. Over the years, Donald competed in several bass fishing tournaments, where he enjoyed both the thrill of the competition and the camaraderie of fellow anglers. Donald also enjoyed spending time with his family and creating everlasting memories. His impact was great and he will certainly be missed by all who knew him. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Mellisa Nault.

Donald is survived by his daughter, Cheri Hicks of Jacksonville, FL; son-in-law, Robert Nault of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Austin Nault, Torri Lindsey, Taelynn Stevens, and Koltyn Stevens; great grandchildren, Oakley Moore and one great granddaughter on the way, Costa Ann Moore; former spouse and mother of his children, Penny Blitchington; along with several extended family members and friends.

A Celebration of Donald's Life will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 12:00 pm at Ferreira Funeral Services Baldwin Chapel with Chaplain Jim Cox officiating. Donald was a good cousin to me. My husband and I enjoyed his humor. Praying for the family as we all look to Jesus for comfort and peace.
