Donald Lee Holmstrom, of Mora, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2024, with family by his side at GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge. He was 89 years old.
Donald was born on June 11, 1935, on the family farm in Comfort Township, Kanabec County, Minnesota to parents Jonas and Martha (Johnson) Holmstrom. He attended Lafayette Country School until the 9th grade when he had to take on the farm responsibilities after his father had a stroke.
Donald met Norita Butler through his sister Ruth and after a courtship of letters and train rides, they were united in marriage on April 2, 1960. They were blessed with four children that they raised on the farm. While being a full-time farmer his whole life, Don also worked an assortment of other jobs including, McVay Farms, Sportsman Café, Hon Met Fab, Butler Manufacturing, Pamida, custodian at Emmanuel Baptist Church, delivering Meals on Wheels, and other odd jobs. A "Don of all Trades" he was a good woodworker and could fix almost anything. He continued to raise cattle until he was 81 years old.
Don enjoyed traveling and took many family vacations from an Alaskan Cruise to winter in Yellowstone, Montana. He and Norita took several trips to Branson enjoying the music and entertainment. Don was proud of his Swedish Heritage and was able to travel to Sweden in 1985 where his highlight was a smorgasbord of pickled herring. Don was an avid bowler throughout his life and got to be part of a local 70's TV show "Bowling for Dollars", where he won a TV.
A fan of country and bluegrass music, Don taught himself to play the guitar when he was young. He would play and sing every Christmas Eve for family and was even part of a Sven and Ole duo that played at many local events. A devout follower of Jesus, Don was a longtime active member of the Emmanuel Baptist church and looked forward to seeing Jesus when the time came. Most of all, Don loved his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
