Donald Luther Obituary

Donald Roe Luther, age 96, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2025. He was born on July 6, 1929, in Bon Aqua, Tennessee, and spent his retirement years in Centerville, Tennessee-a community he cherished deeply.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, William Roe and Mammie Weems Luther, and by his beloved wife, Mary McClain Luther. He is survived by his daughter, Donna (Chris) Coley; grandchildren Donovan (Mallory) Owens, Nathaniel (Erin) Owens, Mary Kate Coley, and Jon Creed Coley; and great-grandchildren Lincoln Roe and Annie Kay Owens. He is also survived by Brad (Monica) Davis, Lynn (Bubba) Nelms, many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Don held a special affection for all of his neighbors on Hickory Street, who enriched his days with fellowship and kindness.

After graduating high school, Don enlisted in the United States Air Force at the age of 18. He soon found himself stationed near London during the end of the Korean war, helping safeguard America's emerging atomic deterrence. Upon returning home, he worked briefly at Genesco-the local shoe plant-long enough to meet the love of his life, Mary.

Using the GI Bill, Don pursued his education and earned a master's degree in Education with a minor in Art. At a job fair near the end of his studies, he met the company where he would spend his entire professional career. Crawford & Company offered just $100 more per month than a teaching position with Metro Nashville Public Schools. As an insurance adjuster in the Memphis area, Don intentionally declined multiple promotions so he could keep his family rooted and continue caring for those he loved. Additionally, Don was a cherished Elder at Highland Street Church of Christ, where he was deeply loved by many, and remained actively involved in the life and service of the church.

Don's greatest joy was his family. He rarely missed a grandchild's ballgame, no matter the distance, showing up with steadfast enthusiasm and pride. He loved his community, served faithfully in his church, and lived his life with humility, devotion, and quiet strength.

The family asks that memorial donations in Don's honor be made to Camp Meribah, which serves the greater Hickman County area and surrounding counties. Operated by the Centerville Church of Christ, the camp welcomes more than 300 campers over three weeks each summer-more than half of whom are able to attend because of generous gifts of time and financial support. Don Luther gave both, and the camp held a special place in his heart.

He will be remembered for his deep love of family, unwavering faith, and the steady kindness he offered to all who knew him.
