Donald Modrall Obituary

DONALD “DON” E. MODRALL
August 2, 1933 ˜ October 14, 2025

Donald E. Modrall passed away peacefully at The Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver, WA, October 14, 2025 at the age of 92. Don was born in Pomona, Missouri, the second of six children, and moved to Vancouver in 1944.
Don graduated from Fort Vancouver High School and attended four years at Clark College, Vancouver, WA, and spent most of his life in the Vancouver area. After graduating from Clark College, he enlisted in the Coast Guard for four years, then began his career as an auto machinist before finding his niche in building homes, building numerous homes in the Vancouver area, and, his pride, a log home in Mapleton, Oregon. The last few years, his time was spent between Mapleton, Oregon, and Desert Hot Springs, California.
Don was known for his kindness and help for others. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to any friend or family member with a smile on his face and usually a new idea or two. He liked to introduce his new ideas with the phrase, “I had a dream...”!
He leaves a legacy of kindness and generosity.
Don was an avid gardener and loved having a vegetable garden big enough to share with the neighbors. Don was very proud of his hibiscus, he could grow anything, and always had a beautiful yard.
Don is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Modrall; and his devoted dog, Charlie Brown. He is also survived by his brother, Lynn “Skinner” Modrall and his wife, Flory; his sister, Linda Ellis and her
husband, Dan; his son, Daniel Modrall and his wife, Pauline, his daughter, Julie Claflin, and his daughter, Lori Marlow; he is also survived by his stepchildren, Rick Kuehnert, Jean Nisperos, Kim Branstetter, and James Mason; five grandkids; four step grandkids; four great-grandkids and six step great-grandkids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Don will be greeted in heaven by his parents, Ralph and Sylvia; his brother, Gail “Cowboy” Modrall; sisters, Dorothy Hammerstaedt and Helen Loughry; and his stepdaughter, Michelle “Joey” Mason.
Services will be held at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on November 8 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Ray Hickey Hospice House or the Caring Closet.

I am saddened to see a man whom I had so much respect for growing up, has passed. Don Modrall is the father of a friend of mine, Dan. Don was always so kind to me. A very soft spoken nice person. He always made you feel welcome. Don and Lynn had taken Dan and I hunting with them to Rock Creek Canyon in Bickleton. He bagged a deer and was so excited, we were all happy for him. He even gave me some of the meat. Besides being an avid outdoorsman, he was also a gifted machinist. I had taken my Model A Ford engine to him around 1980 that he rebuilt at his machine shop he and Lynn had opened. It still runs great 45 years later. Most of all, his kind demeanor with that big smile and handshake he greeted you with will always stuck with me. God will open up heaven's door for him, no questions asked. So sorry to the family for the loss of such a great man.
