My mother, Jean, was the oldest of nine children in Millcreek and Erie, PA. She had six younger brothers-Rich, Chuck, Ted, Ron, Don, and Bob-who frequently spent time with us during our upbringing. Despite having four children themselves, my parents, Jean and Jim, always made room for guests, ensuring that everyone felt welcome.

Growing up, it was a delight for us to have our uncles visit, often bringing gifts, treats, and sharing stories from their service, college experiences, or recent travels. Among them, Uncle Don visited numerous times. I have vivid memories of Uncle Don arriving in our neighborhood in his yellow Buick Gran Sport muscle car, bearing gifts to celebrate our birthdays. For my 12th birthday, he gifted me my first new baseball glove, a Wilson A-2000. Last fall, I had the opportunity to see Uncle Don again and remind him of that cherished memory and how much the new glove meant to me as a child. We reminisced about those wonderful moments we shared.

I had thought that I would see him again this year. Now, I regret not expressing my affection by hugging him and telling him I loved him.

I will forever treasure the fond memories of the time Uncle Don spent with us during those summers long ago.
