In memory of
James Winkler
February 25, 2024
I worked with Don in 2002 - 2004 on a consultancy assignment for USAID EGAT. DAI was asked to develop a strategy paper on enterprise growth, underwhat conditions does enterprise growth contribute to economic growth, and to hold industry consultations and five training workshops around the world. Don was a pleasure to work with. He had very practical thinking about emerging and developing economies and easily fit in with the team of DAI colleagues that I led. I was honored to work with him and learned so much from him. I did not realize he passed away in 2021 during the covid period. May he rest in peace and all those who knew and loved Don carry forward his spirit of collegiality, rigorous thinking, scholarship and making a difference in the world.

What a warm memory, our colleague Don. So perceptive, open-minded, and empathic. So wry, and yet so wise. So ready always to share of himself, his learning, and his intuition. A model for many.

It was a privilege to know and work with Don. He was a decent and good human being—a combination of smart, thoughtful, kind and humble. My condolences to Karen and family and how lucky to be close to such a wonderful person.

Don is one of the deeply decent people. Smart, funny, thoughtful, insightful. He'll be sorely missed. Karen, and all Don's children and family, we hold you in our thoughts every day.

Dear Karen, I am so sorry to read that Don recently died. He was a special person and mentor to me at HIID.I also have fond memories of playing tennis with him on our HIID team. I will always value having known him all those years. Love that smile! So Don!
