Donald Kenton Wright, affectionately known as Don, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in Portland, Tennessee. He was born on September 22, 1939, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Joe Willie Wright and Hallie Marie House Wright. Don's indelible spirit and positivity shone brightly throughout his life, earning him a reputation as someone who was friendly and never met a stranger.
A proud veteran, Don served in the United States Army as a military policeman at the Raven Rock Mountain Complex, a secure, underground nuclear bunker in Pennsylvania known colloquially as "The Little Pentagon." This experience shaped his strong character and dedication to his duties as a citizen.
Don’s professional journey included a fulfilling career as a pipefitter and an educator, where he taught drafting at a trade school in Lebanon, Tennessee. His commitment to public service was evident during his tenure as a Tennessee State Senator from 1992 to 1996 and as the Mayor of Gallatin from 1997 to 2006. Through his leadership, he made a lasting impact on his community.
He graduated from Goodlettsville High School in the class of 1958 and was also an accomplished author, leaving behind a literary legacy that includes titles such as *The Woodsman*, *The Captive*, *The Last Plantation*, and *Gone to Texas*. These works reflect his creativity and passion for history and storytelling.
Don was a longtime member of First Baptist Gallatin on Main. He also enjoyed metal detecting, a hobby that offered him delight and adventure.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Candace Elizabeth Wright; brother Joseph Maxwell Wright; and sister-in-law Elizabeth Ann Gregory.
Don was supported by a loving family, including his wife of 30 years, Patricia Wright; his brother, David (Jane) Wright; his grandson, James Kenton Wright; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Ralph Gregory and Steve (Gayla) Gregory; his sisters-in-law, Peggy (Larry) Ard and Judy (Harry) Mann; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy.
Visitation services will be held at Alexander Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Gallatin on Sunday, March 1, from 1 PM to 5 PM, and again on Monday, March 2, from 10 AM to 11 AM. A funeral service will take place on Monday, March 2, at 11 AM, with burial accompanied by military graveside honors following at Gallatin City Cemetery at 12 PM.
As we remember Don, let us honor a life well-lived, marked by service, creativity, and a genuine warmth that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
