A Life in Lights: Remembering Donna Jean Brecken

She left us quietly, the way a favorite song fades at the end of the night-still humming in your chest long after the last note. Donna Jean born October 18, 1934 lived not one life but many, each chapter stitched together with laughter, tinsel, and an open door.

Christmas was her love language. She didn't just decorate a tree; she built a cathedral of color and light. The kitchen smelled of cinnamon and secrets, the table groaned under platters meant for twice the crowd, and every guest-family, friend, or the mailman who lingered too long-left with a full belly and a story to tell. She hosted not out of duty, but because joy, to her, was meant to be shared in excess.

On crisp December evenings, she'd gather us to sing carols to the neighborhood or herd everyone onto the town trolley like a shepherd of sparkle. Windows fogged with breath and song, she'd point out every house aglow. Children pressed noses to glass; adults forgot their worries. She made the ordinary feel like a gift unwrapped in real time.

Her smile was sunrise in human form-warm, inevitable, impossible to look away from. It welcomed strangers, steadied the heartbroken, and reminded every soul in its path that they mattered. She carried stories the way others carry photographs: folded close, ready to unfold at a moment's notice. Tales of first loves, narrow escapes, small triumphs, and the kind of laughter that outlived the punchline.

Life handed her its share of hard winters, but she met them all with spring in her step. She taught us through her life's example that falling is just practice for standing taller, and that love is the only thing worth fighting for.

She collected people the way others collect stamps-friends from every walk of life, neighbors who became family, and grandkids who hung on her every word. No one left her house hungry, unloved, or without a tall tale to tell. She taught us that "rules" were suggestions, kindness was a superpower, and a good swear word fixed most problems.

She leaves behind a constellation of people who swear the world is brighter because she was in it. No flowers, please. Light a candle, play your favorite carol, tell someone they're enough. Host a party. Ride the trolley if you can find one. Live like the room is brighter when you walk in-because with her, it always was.

Services will be a celebration, details to follow. In lieu of sorrow, wrap someone in the kind of hug she gave: fierce, lingering, and impossible to forget.

Until we meet at the next twinkling light our sweet Mama, Auntie, Grandma, Mama Honey, Nonna. Save us a seat by the window.
