Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home of Willis on Oct. 24, 2025.
Donnie Olan Chumley, age 83, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, October 20, 2025. Born in Diboll, Texas, on June 1, 1942, Don was the beloved son of Olan and Kathryn Chumley. He lived a life marked by service, devotion, and unwavering love for his family and community. Don is survived by his son, James Chumley, and daughter-in-law, Kathie Chumley; his daughter, Jena Spikes, and son-in-law, James Spikes; and his cherished grandchildren: Ty Chumley, Jamie Cram and husband Dennis Cram, and Jordan Spikes. He also leaves behind his brother, Mike Chumley, and sister-in-law, Diane Chumley; sister-in-law, Sandra Archibald; nieces and nephews: Stacey Archibald, Shannon and Scott McNeil, Lindsey Chumley, Keri and Ed Tingley; and great-nieces and nephews: Ian McNeil, Sadie McNeil, Kyler Tingley, Keaton Tingley, Gage Reding, Ashley Erickson, and Katie Erickson.
Don was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara Chumley; his parents, Olan and Kathryn Chumley; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne and Becky Chumley, Terry and Vicky Chumley; and his parents-in-law, James and Lucille Mainord.
After graduating high school, Don began his career as a farrier and married the love of his life, Barbara, on June 22, 1962. He later joined the Harris County Constable's Office, Precinct 1, serving in the Mounted Patrol under Constable Walter Rankin. Don's dedication and leadership led him to become Chief Deputy, a role he held with distinction for nearly two decades. In 1979, Don and Barbara moved their family to
Willis, Texas. When Montgomery County Precinct 1 Constable Albert Williams retired, he encouraged Don to run for office. Don was elected and began his tenure as Constable in 1989. Over the next 28 years, he faithfully served the community, retiring in 2017. Under his leadership, the office grew from a small team of four to a robust department that included school resource officers for Willis ISD, Lake Conroe Patrol, MAP motorist
assistance, civil case support, Internet Crimes Against Children investigations, and K9 units serving schools and other agencies.
Don's greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He loved traveling in his motorhome with Barbara and their children and grandchildren. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and raising livestock. He was a passionate supporter of his grandchildren's activities-from livestock shows to swimming, dance, and barrel racing-and could always be counted on as their biggest fan.
Don's legacy is one of love, service, and unwavering commitment to his family and community. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
