Donnie Ray Schoonover, a father, friend, avid outdoorsman, and Christian of the Baptist faith passed away on July 10, 2023, surrounded by his loving children. He resided in
Norman, Oklahoma, alongside his faithful companion, his dog Taz.
Donnie was born in Topeka, Kansas to Jean Knowlton in 1953, and was raised by his mother and stepfather, Carl Schoonover. He spent his formative years in
Chanute, Kansas, where he developed a strong connection to the great outdoors. His lifelong passion for deer hunting, fishing, and camping began during these early years and remained a cherished part of his life until the end.
In 1973, Donnie entered into marriage with Pam Wright, with whom he shared a beautiful journey and raised three children: Dondi, Dusti, and Darci. Their home was a place where they navigated life's challenges together, creating lasting memories. Donnie and Pam remained friends until the day of his passing.
In 1984, Donnie married Sally Robinson, a loving union that extended his family even further. Alongside Sally, he helped raise his son Earnest Duncan. Donnie and Sally continued their friendship until her passing in 2017, honoring the bond they shared throughout their lives.
Donnie played an instrumental role in the upbringing of Mary Katherine Scott. Donnie's heart was expansive, and he embraced each child as his own, sharing his love, wisdom, and adventurous spirit with them.
Professionally, Donnie pursued a career as a truck driver for over 45 years. His handle was "Okie White Tornado." His commitment and work ethic were commendable, and he retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and reliability. However, it was his time spent outdoors that truly brought him joy and fulfillment.
Donnie's favorite moments were those spent in the woods or on the water, teaching his children and grandchildren the art of hunting, fishing, and how to search for pine knots. Whether it was imparting his knowledge or sharing stories around the campfire, he reveled in passing down his love for nature to the next generation. His legacy lives on through the seeds of passion he planted within his family.
Donnie Ray Schoonover is survived by his children: Dondi Schoonover and wife Amy, Dusti Rose, Darci Schoonover, Earnie Duncan and wife Alisha, and Kathy and husband Frank. His grandchildren include Dylon, Kylee, Lauren, Madison, Matthew, Kamden, Trinity, and Freya, and he had the joy of knowing his great-granddaughter, Prezley. Donnie is also survived by his mother, Jean Knowlton, and sisters Carol and Sharon.
Throughout his life, Donnie cultivated profound friendships, and his loss will be deeply felt by his lifelong friends, David and Virginia Kill, and Jimmy Bockover, as well as numerous other close friends and relatives. Donnie was preceded in death by his stepfather, Carl Schoonover, sister Brenda, and ex-wife and lifelong friend, Sally Schoonover. He also mourned the loss of his son-in-law, Matt Rose.
Today, we remember Donnie Ray Schoonover as a man who lived life to the fullest, finding solace and peace in nature's embrace. As we bid him farewell, let us take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit will forever reside in the woods and on the water he loved so deeply. May he rest in eternal peace.
