Doreen Mae Lucas

Doreen Mae Lucas age 89 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home in Hilo. She was born at home in Hilo on December 19, 1935 to Virgin B. And Mae Costa. She was a graduate of Hilo High School class of 1954. She worked for 46 years for the Hilo Tribune Herald. First as a Lino-type operator, then as a Type-setter in the Composing Room. In 1964 she married Joseph C. Lucas and they raised 3 children. Joe and Doreen loved to travel. For over 4 decades they traveled extensively all over the world, including visiting over 30 countries and all of the 50 states in the Union. After retiring, she was an active member of R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) in Hilo for nearly 30 years. She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph C. Lucas and her daughter Cheryl Lucas Tokihiro. She is survived by her daughter Karen Lucas, her son Noland Lucas, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation from 8:30-10 a.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at Church of the Holy Cross, 440 W Lanikaula Street, Hilo, HI 96720. Funeral service at 10 a.m. Graveside committal service to follow 11:30 a.m. at East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2 pavilion.
