This obituary was lovingly prepared by the family
Doris Mae Wilson Bell, 88, passed away peacefully and enveloped in love on February 28, 2026, after a decade-long decline with vascular dementia, and having survived a near-fatal medical event in 2019. Family care was compassionately supported by the Arbor Terrace staff, Amedisys Hospice, the doctors and Palliative Care team at Kaiser Permanente TownPark, Rosalind Howard, and a host of sweet friends.
Born in
Covington, Georgia, to Frances Josephine Swetland and William Bryant Wilson, Doris Mae was the fourth of nine children. A 1955 graduate of Newton County High School and former student at Tallulah Falls Boarding School, she moved to Atlanta as a young adult, enjoying dances at Ft. McPherson while sharing houses and working alongside her siblings, with whom she maintained lifelong bonds. Once married, she created homes for her family in Brookhaven, Decatur, and Duluth.
Doris is survived by her children, Sherra Melissa Bell of Atlanta and Michael Dwayne (Kayle) Bell of Marietta; brothers Earle Bryant Wilson of Lawrenceville, Norris Franklin Wilson of Covington, and Wallace Byron "Buddy" Wilson of
Murphy, NC; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson, and a large extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Laura Elizabeth "Bettye" Wilson, Sherra Sue Wilson Halcisak, and Rebecca Eileen Wilson Yost; brothers James "Jimmy" Ray Wilson and Donald "Donnie" George Wilson; as well as the father of her children and former husband of 32 years and, Ronny Dewayne Bell, originally from Bessemer and Opelika, Alabama.
Following Bettye's death in 1971, Doris became the family matriarch. She hosted family gatherings and provided attentive in-home care for her father and other elders, including the aunt and uncle who had cared for her during a childhood health crisis. She also served as a surrogate mother to her three youngest siblings and a surrogate mother and grandmother to her sister Sherra's children and granddaughters. She never met a stranger and openly extended her broad definition of family.
Doris was among the first employees of Dixie Finance, founded by Atlanta's well-known entrepreneur, J. Mack Robinson - returning later to work for him again at Delta Life Insurance Company after her kids started school and while supporting Ronny's dream of self-employment. In the early days of staying home with her kids, she operated an informal home-based childcare for family and friends and more formally taught preschool. From 1976 to 1996, she co-owned Duluth Office Supply & Business Machines with Ronny. After closing the business, burying her elders, and recovering from her divorce, Doris found fulfillment and steady employment working in private and facility elder care, retiring from Chambrel at Roswell in 2010.
While she enjoyed the independence of her professional life, Doris' favorite roles were Mama, Aunt Doris, and Grandmommy. Nothing made her happier than to have a baby in her arms and as each child grew, she created lasting memories through imaginative play, hikes, and trips to feed the ducks, as well as faithful attendance at sporting events, dance performances, and graduations. Even with dementia, nothing made her smile like a visit from her kids and grandkids.
She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed but we trust she is at peace and once again enjoying the memories of a life well-lived.
Like generations of Wilsons before her, Doris' arrangements have been entrusted to J.C. Harwell Funeral Home of Covington. A simple service of remembrance and interment will be held on Saturday, March 7th at Lovejoy UMC (12835 Highway 36) in Covington – the church of her childhood that her grandparents helped establish in 1888 before her beloved Daddy was even born. Family will gather in the sanctuary at 1pm and the casket will remain open for other guests from 1:30–2:00 p.m., followed by a brief graveside memorial with the chance to share memories. All are invited to remain afterward for visitation and light refreshments that include a best attempt at replicating Doris's famous Mac & Cheese and Pound Cake alongside other favorites.
J.C. Harwell and Son Funeral Home has been entrusted with these services.
