Doris's Legacy
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.

Mrs. Doris Genell Allen Hughes was born on September 9, 1943, to the parentage of the late Ulysses "Dock" Allen and Alice Mae Allen. She received her Heavenly wings on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, GA.
As a child she was reared primarily by her devoted great uncle and aunt Robert & Janie Blackwell.
An avid learner, Doris graduated from Blackwell Memorial High School with honors. She was the Valedictorian of her graduating class. Upon graduating high school, Doris attended classes at Fort Valley State College.
In June of 1963, Doris was united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Aaron Hughes. To this union, she welcomed two beautiful daughters, who were a very important part of her life.
Her career path included working many years at Blue Bell Sewing Plant in Comer, GA. In 1988, her path led her to the Elbert County Board of Education where she remained until her retirement. She was an educator at heart, leaving indelible marks on the lives of the children she was blessed to work with.
Doris received Christ at the early age of 12. She joined the Oak Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. C. H. Atwater. Committed to living for Christ, she actively served her church, the community and the Kingdom of God until her demise. Over the years, she used her God-given gifts, talents and abilities to serve God and others. She held many positions including Finance Secretary, Sunday School teacher, Bible Studies teacher, President of Mission-In-Action, Advisor of Senior & Junior Usher Boards and the Junior Sunbeam Choir, H. T. Butler Choir member, Secretary of Program Committee, Chairperson of Scholarship Ministry, and of the Little Sister/Big Sister Program. She was also very well known for being an inspirational speaker and a dynamic Mistress of Ceremony. Immersed in servanthood, she was always busy working for the Lord, convinced that her efforts in the Lord would be eternally rewarded in His presence.
1st Corinthians 15:58 ~ Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
Other Church Affiliations:
She thoroughly enjoyed writing and did it so well with tact and skill. She was secretary of Elbert County Ushers Inspiration, Elbert County Mission Union, BTU Congress, Assistant Secretary of Freewill Association, Member of Sunday School Convention, Youth Advisor of Eighth District Young People, and she alongside Mrs. Carolyn Heard Davis organized Home & Foreign Mission with the 8th District.

Member of Board of Directors of T. J. & Friends, NAACP, Secretary of Democratic Party, Elbert County Concerned Citizens, and Assistant Tutor with Allen Winfrey Jones Tutoring Program.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest daughter Virginia Wells (David), and six siblings: Lee Allen (Bobbie Jean), Dan Thomas Allen, Theodore Roosevelt Allen, Alice Brenda Rojas, Lois Marie Allen, and Shirley Ann Allen.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her devoted husband, Aaron of 62 years; her youngest daughter, Robin Simmons (Anthony) of Covington, GA; her son-in-law David Wells of Milledgeville, GA; seven grandchildren Shayla Wells, Mario Simmons (Crystal), Breanna Wells, Hendrick Simmons (Ivory), David Wells, Allison Simmons (Javier), Joy Wells; six great grandchildren; ten siblings Bobbie Jean McFarland of Washington, D.C., Lawrence "Bubba" Allen (Sandra), Carol D. Allen, Calvin D. Allen, & Carey E. Allen (Edwina) all of Passaic, NJ, Gwendolyn E. Allen of Norcross, GA, Willie Allen (Rogene) of Royston, GA, Shelby Harper (Felton), Sandra Cade (Sammy) & Phyllis Brown all of Hartwell, GA; seven siblings-in-law Brenda Trimble, Geneva Glaze, Mac (Shirley) Hughes, Gail Walton, Troyce Turner, Greg Hughes, Myra Hughes; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and other relatives and friends who knew and loved her.

Public viewing will be held on Thursday, January 1, 2026, from 1:00pm - 5:00pm, located at Mack's Funeral Home - Elberton Chapel.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 1:00pm, located at Oak Grove Baptist Church -
Elberton, GA.
Interment service will immediately follow the funeral service located at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery -
Elberton, GA.
