DORIS EILEEN JESSOP OMAND – LOVING WIFE, MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER, GREAT GRANDMOTHER AND FRIEND
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother on Tuesday, July 12th, 2022. Doris was the third of four children born to Harry and Florence Jessop in Leask, Saskatchewan, Canada. Raised on the family farm just north of Leask, she told stories of farm life – especially how she didn't like the chickens and didn't like to drink milk! And how every year on her birthday her present was the day off from chores. They traveled far to town, rarely visiting a doctor; her response to any ailment was "it will be better in the morning". She had nothing but fond memories of growing up on the farm with her siblings Billy, Kay and Phyllis. They were a tight-knit family that loved to laugh and joke. Years later when she and Al got a CB radio, her "handle" was "Prairie Chicken"! She was a proud student of Bramshott School, a one-room school house on the prairie. She told stories of carrying water to school and how her father provided the leather strap the teacher used to discipline the children. In spite of her strict upbringing, Doris approached discipline with two words, "smarten up!"
After graduating high school, Doris moved to Saskatoon and started working for Northern Electric Telephone Company. It was there that she met the love of her life – Al Omand (think farm girl meets British immigrant). After they were married in 1953, Al's job with General Motors took them to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada where they settled in and had three children. In 1974, Al's job moved them to the United States - Dayton, OH for 18 months and then to Bloomfield Hills, MI where they remained until 1987. Being outdoors fed Doris' soul - especially by the lakes and in the gardens. In 1987, after Al's retirement, they moved to Gull Lake on the west side of Michigan, then in 1991 they moved back to the Detroit area on Lake Angelus they had become grandparents and their hearts needed to be closer to watch them all grow; and boy did she love her grandchildren! She was the kind of granny that played, laughed, sang, joked and loved with all her heart. In 2005, they decided to move to Birmingham, Michigan, where she lived until her final days.
All of these moves afforded her the ability to make many life-long friends. Because her family was not near, her friends were very important to her. She made an impact through her volunteer work at the church, Lahser High School, American Cancer Society, Karmanos, Pontiac Lighthouse, and the "craft lady" at a local nursing home. She was also involved in many activities that continued to allow her to feed her athletic and social nature: bowling, tennis, garden club, Welcome Wagon, and dressing up and being silly with her friends! Doris loved to have a good time and loved a good joke!
She enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener. She was most happy when her hands were in the dirt – tending to her enormous vegetable garden and outstanding rose gardens. She lovingly harvested the toils of her labor and we all benefited from year-round canned and frozen vegetables.
Doris died peacefully at her home she shared with her husband on Tuesday July 12th, 2022. She is survived by her beloved husband Alastair Ian Omand, married 69 years. Loving mother of Keith Omand (Georgiann), Jill Omand (the late Greg Stephens), Alison Shefferly (Robert). Caring grandmother of Adrienne (Michael), Alexis (Petro), Katina (Blake), William (Elena), Sommer, Ian (Tatum), and Jillian. Dear great grandmother of 10 - James, Sophia, Harry, Dionysia, George, Demetria, Miklos, Georgianna, Efimia, and Markella. She is also survived by sister-in-law Audrey Jessop, brother-in-law Harry Keller, brother-in-law James Omand, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Florence Jessop, siblings William, Kay, and Phyllis.
Family will receive friends at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward Ave. (between 13-14 Mile), Tuesday, July 19, 2022, 3pm until funeral service at 5pm.
In lieu of flowers family suggests memorial tributes to Karmanos Cancer Institute.
