Doris Schelin.
Our beloved Doris was full of life and love. In her 95 years here among us, she was the foundation of our sprawling family and led the way with her principles and compassion. Alongside Bob, her husband for more than 70 years, until his death in 2019, she raised Barry, Judy and Abby and then helped them raise their children and their children’s children. Her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren—and their partners—relied on her and loved her as much as she loved them. Theirs was a love that knew no bounds. Eight grandchildren. Thirteen great-grandchildren. All devoted to her. All deeply grateful for the time they had with her—the lessons she imparted, all that wisdom and kindness and generosity and humor—and of course the recipes, too. Doris was beautiful, elegant and smart. She always dressed for the occasion and looked like she’d stepped out of the pages of Vogue. Her outfits and the décor of her homes were a reflection of her exquisite taste. She and Bob made their homes in Brooklyn, Nassau County and south Florida, traveled the world for decades and lived a rich and rewarding life together centered around family. Doris dedicated countless hours to charity, especially JAFCO, to benefit underprivileged youth. She loved to cook and bake—and her specialties included brisket, moon cookies and pistachio cake. She loved family gatherings. Bob would always be the life of the party, but Doris the heart. She spent her life making everyone around her feel safe, special and loved. Born in Philadelphia to Abraham and Anna Sirota, she was one of five siblings. Ida and Jean pre-decease her. Paul and Ben survive her.
