Doris Jane Sprankle, 90, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away, Saturday, February 22, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born Wednesday, February 28, 1934, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Ellsworth Long and the late Freda May (Roser) Long.
Doris attended Boonsboro High School. After raising her family, she returned to school to earn her GED. She spent 35 years as a licensed daycare provider, touching the lives of many children. Doris was a dedicated member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she was an active Catholic Daughter and a member of the Sodality of Mary for over 50 years. Known for her famous cream puffs, Doris was also a passionate gardener and avid reader, a love she passed on to her children.
She is survived by her children, Ella M. Clevenger and husband Charles, Richard H. Sprankle, II and wife Dina; seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; sister, Ruth Long; and brothers, Robert, Frank, and Sam Long.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Richard Hurd Sprankle; son, John F. Sprankle; grandson, Richard Sprankle, III; sisters, Mary Sprankle, Rebecca Smith, Ella Mae Long, Catherine Benner, Margaret Smith, and Vernice "Annie" Henson; and brother, Elmer Long, Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, March 3, 2025 at 11:00 am, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 17630 Virginia Avenue Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Matt DeSusco officiating.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home, Sunday, March 2, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Interment will be at the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, MD.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Washington County for the care they provided, Caretaker Pam and her son for their weekend shenanigans, neighbor Tina and her husband for taking care of the yard and snow removal, neighbors Danny and Sally for watching over Doris, and the DeSensi family for always lending a helping hand.
