Our family is heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dorothy (Dot) A Baccari, who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and loved ones on October 26, 2025 at the age of 83.
Born in Newport, RI on November 8, 1941. She was the daughter to the late Joseph and Mary (Bettencourt) Lacerda. She grew up on Lacerda's Farm in Portsmouth RI with a large family. She married James in 1963 as they began to raise their family in Newport. Dorothy was the cornerstone of our family, a source of endless love and strength.
After graduating from Rogers High School, she worked for the Electric Company and part-time at Almacs Supermarket for several years as a young woman. She then found a career with the City of Newport where she was secretary to the Chief of Police and then went on to become secretary to the Mayor of Newport for many years. She was known for her dedication and retired after 40 years. Her greatest joy, however, was her family, especially her grandchildren Michael and Nicholas who brought her so much joy. She enjoyed watching them play baseball, spending weekends during the summer with family and friends in Lakeville, MA and winters in Fort Myers, FL.
Dorothy is survived by her two daughters Donna Baccari (Christopher Dutcher) of Lakeville, MA and Darlene Baccari of Newport RI and two beloved grandchildren, Michael Baccari and Nicholas Baccari (Julia Tenore) both of Newport RI and Jeff Baccari as well as other loving family members and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Baccari, their son James W. Baccari Jr.; and her siblings, Anthony Lacerda, Mary Nunes, Belle Toner, Henry, Francis and Joseph Lacerda and Lucy Mee.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, October 31, 2025 from 9AM to 10AM at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport RI with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph's Church, 5 Mann Ave, Newport RI. Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown RI.
