Dorothy Norma Bennett

Dorothy N. Bennett, a former longtime Burlington resident known for her warmth, creativity, and colorful personality, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2025 in Portland, Maine. She was born in Boston, the only child of Norman and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Atkinson. Dorothy grew up in Newton and was educated in the Newton school system, graduating from Newton High School.
After graduation, Dorothy began her career as a waitress, a role that perfectly suited her friendly and lively nature. It was while working that she met her first husband, Walter Reardon. The two were married in June of 1955 and together they welcomed their son, Michael. Though their marriage came to an end, Dorothy's strength, humor, and grit carried her through, and she returned to waitressing, where her sharp wit and easy laugh made her a favorite among customers and coworkers alike.
Not long after returning to work, Dorothy caught the eye of Walter Bennett, who was immediately taken by her charm and vivacious spirit. The two quickly fell in love and were married, beginning a partnership that lasted 54 years until Walter's passing in 2016. Together they built a life full of laughter, friendship, and shared adventures.
Dorothy was deeply involved in her community. She was a proud member of the Burlington Historical Society and the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society. A talented and meticulous dollhouse furniture maker, she spent countless hours perfecting every detail of her miniature creations. each one a masterpiece of patience and imagination. She was lucky to have a green thumb and her beautiful gardens were featured twice on Burlington access television, a testament to her nurturing soul.
She was also famous for her big heart and sharp tongue, Dorothy could curse better than most longshoremen, and she did so with a flair that somehow made everyone around her laugh instead of blush. Her salty language was part of her charm, a reflection of her honesty, humor, and spirited approach to life.
A devoted mother, Dorothy adored her son Michael and spoiled him year-round, except on his birthday, which fell too close to Christmas. Every year she'd remind him with a grin that his birthday present was waiting "under the tree." Her humor and love made every day with her memorable.
Dorothy's home was always open and full of life. She was known for hosting her legendary Thanksgiving breakfast, where nearly thirty people would gather for a hearty morning meal before heading off to their dinners. She was happiest surrounded by family, friends, and laughter.
She also poured her energy into the Burlington Historical Museum, assisting with restoration projects and community events, and she was a proud member of the "Floaties," a spirited group that sponsored and built floats for Burlington's Fourth of July parades.
Dorothy is survived by her loving son, Michael Reardon and his wife Sheila of Bethel Maine as well as many extended family, In-laws, and friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her visiting hours on Wednesday, November 5th from 4pm to 7pm at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St. Burlington. Her funeral service will begin at 9am at the funeral home with a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10am at St. Margaret's Church, 111 Winn St. Burlington. Services will conclude with a burial taking place in Pine Haven Cemetery. Burlington.
