Dorothy Cummings Obituary

Published by Weed Corley Fish Funeral Homes and Cremation Services - Lake Travis on Dec. 12, 2018.
Dorothy June Cummings January 21, 1934 - December 12, 2018 Austin, Texas | Age 84 Dorothy June Cummings, 84, was born on January 21, 1934 in Fort Benning, Georgia to Mary Maude Dossett and James K. White. She graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston, Texas and Louisiana State University with a degree in English. In 1957 she married Col. John P. Cummings USAF. They had six children. Dorothy June passed away on December 12, 2018 at home in Austin in the presence of loved ones. She is survived by her sister Schansa D'Ingianni Roberts and six children: John "Sean" Patrick Cummings Jr. and wife Kimberly of Austin, Texas; Mary Catherine Doerr and husband Joseph of Austin, Texas; Michael Brick Cummings of Sneeds, Florida; Kevin Andrew Cummings and wife Laurie of Flower Mound, Texas; Colleen Elise Cummings of Houston, Texas; and Erin Christine Carr and husband John of Austin, Texas. Dorothy June had eight grandchildren: James Asher Berlingeri; Rachael Mae Cummings, Mary Katherine Cummings, and John Patrick Cummings III; Daniel Brick Cummings; Kevin Andrew Cummings Jr. and Garrett Sean Cummings; and Austin Matthew Carr and Norah Cecelia Carr. She also had one great-grandchild: Jessica Angel Berlingeri. Some of Dorothy June's fondest memories were of her years at LSU where she met her lifelong friend LaRessa Rowe Stell of Austin, Texas. Dorothy June taught mathematics for over 30 years at schools in Toledo, OH, Houston, and Austin. She loved swimming and was a member of the famed Shamrock Hilton's Corkettes. She was also a champion marksman, and was the first woman on the rifle team at Rice University. She was an avid reader, an advocate for her children and their spouses, and much beloved by her many extended family members, friends, and anyone who knew or met her. True to the literal meaning of her given names Dorothy ("God's Gift") and June ("Goddess of Marriage" / "Queen of the Gods") Dorothy June was known by anyone who met her as the quintessential mother: She loved children above all else, and thought of everyone she met as a child of her own on loan from God. A memorial mass will be held at Emmaus Catholic Church in Lakeway, Texas, Friday, December 21, 2018 at 11 a.m. Cremation services are provided by Weed-Corley-Fish Lake Travis Chapel.

Our deepest condolences to the family for the loss of your sweet loving mom! We met her in many occasions, and she was always smiling and had such a warmth about her. Her kind hearted children are quite the testament of what a great mom she must have been. My God grant you all peace and comfort knowing that she now sits at the feet of Jesus.
